Given that I imagine you as the architect from the Matrix in a basement somewhere, assembling gifs and yanet clips, this checks out.

My hand went numb just from opening the metal handle on my front door.
#### this weather.
Also some electronic door locks are not functioning in this weather.

Surprisingly my electronic lock has been fine, and it’s actually the handle mechanism that has been giving me more trouble.

That's why I made sure to get one with a key backup just in case. Did have trouble opening it a few days ago (had to pull on the door to get zero friction on the bolt), but turns out I just needed to replace the batteries, been good otherwise.

Mine can be boosted from the outside with a 9V, but it also has a manual bolt, so it's just for the code. I suspect it doesn't draw much power.

We bought the electronic locks that actually need to be turned by hand to lock/unlock. We previously had fully electronic ones but found that the gears strip too easily and causes issues. Although the Schlage ones that we use have their own issue where the spring mechanism doesn't work effectively in the cold after a number of years. Ours started giving us issues after about 6 or 7 years so I adjusted the spring and it would work great down to -20. I finally replaced them all this year with new locks and it works great again.

Yeah I've got a Schlage and have had it since 2018 and no problems so far.

Cool, I never knew about those; I suspect we'll have to replace our automatic one sooner than later because the deadbolt path isn't always smooth if the door isn't sitting just right

The 'nice alternative to -30 would be somewhere between -5 to +5C which is fine, but still less daylight hours.

Smoke all day, every day as long as people aren't dying or losing their homes in masses. This weather is straight up bad. Chargers aren't working for EV drivers, ICE cars not starting so people either stranded or can't get to work. People with frozen plumbing. Power grid alerts. Increase in EMS calls. This weather is simply no good.

After riding in -34 yesterday I was pumped when the forecast was calling for -36 early this morning. Nothing like breaking your cold weather record back to back, alas it was only -28 when I left. Boourns.

Already into the low -20s on Signal/Coach Hill!
EC calling for a high of -12 now. Weathernetwork now says -17, creeping up from what it's been saying the last few days.

I'm in the South but I've already got my shorts and sandals queued up and ready to go.
I'm going to sit outside of my office in a beach chair in this sweet, balmy, almost Tropical weather.

If that sort of battery tech is even realistic it would require a lot of investment to make it large scale. Regardless, that doesn't seem to be a solution that can be phased in to the masses by 2035. Seems to me there needs to be some sort of massive breakthrough in power storage or a big drop in consumption before we can phase out fossil fuels.
|
We don't need a big breakthrough. Many places are installing massive grid storage batteries already. And since weight isn't an issue, they don't need to be lithium batteries.
But the mere ability for electric cars to share power back to the grid gives much flexibility to the grid. People often wonder what is the backup for when there isn't sun or wind, or when a power plant suddenly shuts down.
Being able to immediately pull power stored in EV batteries reduces the need for backup greatly.

EVs having big motors is somewhat counter intuitive, especially when we are used to thinking for ICE cars - bigger engine means more fuel used.
An EV doesn't use more energy to move the car 1 km whether the motor is bigger or smaller.
However, the motor acts as a generator when braking. If you have a smaller motor, you are going to max out the regenerative capacity of the motor when braking and lose more energy to heat.
AS fast as you can accelerate, thats how fast you can decelerate and put all of the power back into the batteries.
obviously, that a little simplified, but thats the general principle.

Both weather forecasts have us continuing to get warmer basically up past midnight.
So, it's going to be roughly -15 in the afternoon, then warm up another couple degrees by midnight.

That's what I used on my garage. I didn't like the idea of the power side being exposed to a sub zero temp on the regular (detached garage) and worst case scenario, just use a key to open.
For my house, I use the August locks. The electronic components are on the inside and the outside is a normal deadbolt, so again, I use a key if the thing stops working.

As low as -11 around the city. Feels tropical. Bring on 20 cm of snow, I'll take it. Beats -40 if you ask me.
