Conclusion : as both of you have mentioned, not a stat I use when analyzing a players game performance.
These type of events are rare, and don't materially impact players' stats.

Play on a good team, have good stats - bad team, bad stats. That's true across the board. The key is context: if you have the worst +- on your line, and on your team, by a significant degree, there is information there.

Sorta, except Coleman's +/- versus his linemates is impacted by the fact he's often the last guy one a line change and picks up quite a few points when Backlund and Huberdeau (back then) already changed. And he and Backlund benefit from the shorties. The differences in +/- on that former line are pretty striking. Yegor's -9 is pretty odd.

First of all, how many points do you think would fall into that scenario? hardly any, and it s true of all players (for positive and negative effects).

More to the point, that same effect is equally true for all stats: if Coleman stays out after his linemates, and the team gets a scoring chance, he gets an xGF boost, whether he was in the play or not.

ALL hockey stats are subject to the same flaw that you hold against +-.

For Coleman I've noticed it's been a lot, mainly because he was most often the designated line change forechecker (and Huberdeau tended to be the first guy off). His 5 shp are significant but that's mostly on him so not unfair.

It's more minuses that I sometime just see on the ice and think "how unfair".
