I wanted a futures deal for toffoli and would still prefer thay over Sharan given the trajectory of this team.
I would still take Perreault, musty, ritchie, crystal, heidt, Nadeau, Cowan etc.. over Sharan right now. Not because he's not a really good player but it's because that's what I think this team needs.

A 1st round pick wasn’t on the table for Toffoli though. They could probably flip Sharangovich for a 1st if he keeps this up though

Sure, but that was probably never going to be on the table for Toffoli. He was a 32 year old with one more year left who was unlikely to repeat the career year he just had. If I was the fan of another team and gave up a 1st rounder in a strong draft for that, I would be a little upset.

Flames didn't trade a 70-point winger, they traded a 45-point winger. To get what they got is honestly pretty impressive considering how little Vegas managed for an arguably better player in Reilly Smith. Plenty of reasons to criticize the Flames but this trade was a solid bet from Day 1 IMO.

I doubt it, teams that will looking to give up a 1st will see the same problem Jersey did the guy isn't good enough to play in the top 6 of a good team and doesn't do much in a lower role either, especially if you are giving up a 1st.
He is in the perfect spot for him a team that isn't contending so he can get more minutes than he would with better players and putting ok, not great numbers.
He is a good fit for the next 5 years when we are rebuilding and competing for nothing but once we start to get good it is hard to see where he fits.

We had people saying that acquiring toffoli from Montreal was a steal.
We got him for the price of a rental people said. The wizard at work.
1st(26th oa) +2nd+5th. And this was before his big year last season.
I dont think it was crazy expectations to expect a late 1st back for him especially considering the year he came off of and that we could of retained him down to 2million.

It obviously was considering we:
1. didn’t get a first for him
2. the market proved a first wasn’t on the table
If we retained, we would have one less retention slot right now, which diminishes the potential value of higher profile guys like Lindholm. Is that what you would have preferred?

I'm not sure I buy the argument about retaining given how unlikely it is that they use all three retention slots. I get they wanted the flexibility but I have a hard time believing that an org that has retained salary once in 11 years is suddenly going to do so three times in two months.
But I'm not about to complain about the trade, they got Yegor, dammit.

The trading game really has changed since the cap and its rules have finally become solidified. It's all about asset management now. Hopefully, the organization can think ahead and realize this.
On top of that, it's not like we have some massive sample size. How many times have the Flames rebuilt since the cap came into place? How many times have they been looking to maximize picks by trading off current assets? They've rebuilt once, and been buyer every other year?
Plus this year is special. The cap has been flat for multiple years, and that's never happened before. Cap is at a premium, the organization is retooling, hopefully they take advantage of that.

Teams had basically zero cap last year.
Trade values can fluctuate.
And Calgary was not going to retain, needed to save that powder.

Flames paid that with multiple years left...you can also only retain on 3 players so they likely wanted to keep options open.
If fans aren't happy with this trade I doubt they will ever be happy

Right, because he has no chance of developing because all players are exactly what they currently are, especially young players.
It"s BS takes like this that really drag down this site. I'm not bothered by a pessimistic take, but the arrogance and certainty of your opinions is tiresome. Why don't you go get a job as a scout or in management somewhere, or are just waiting at the keyboard for your big break?

Nothing pessimistic about it at all just factual. Don’t need a job as a scout or management so waiting for nothing but we have already see the professionals agree with my assessment so don’t have to wait for me to get that shot to k is what the professionals think.

While 14 points in 18 games might not be blowing it up exactly, all the players above him on team scoring (4 of them) are older and more experienced. In fact, he is the youngest player on the team besides goaltender Michal Hrabel.

Sounds like you were expecting a lot back for Toffoli. He wasn't nearly enough to ask for the moon.
