Was gonna say - Markstrom played badly. But it wasn't him giving Hyman free passes to the front of the net, or deciding to play Nurse instead of McDavid.

Exactly. Having the desire to win at any cost doesn’t mean you value winning more than anyone else, it just means you value other things less than they might. That’s not always a bad thing, but it’s not necessarily a good thing either. And it’s a terrible way to measure ambition.

I think there are still some interesting players out there the Flames could shake loose, but a top prospect is a stretch. They rarely get moved at the deadline. I would expect players like Olausson (COL), Hameenaho (NJ), Sykora (NYR), and Minten (TOR) to be made available (all very solid prospects), but some of the names being tossed around seem extremely unlikely.

Markstrom's not UFA. He still has 2 years on that contract. And if CGY retains it becomes a team friendly deal.
I'd rather keep him then let TOR have him for anything less than Knies. Imagine trading Markstrom to TOR for a pick and c prospect, then TOR going to the Cup final (or GF, winning it). After the Gilmour & Phanauf trades - it would be unbearable. The Flames would be referred to as the Laffs farm team for a generation.
Just like EDM, TOR has to pay way more than everyone else. A 1st and B prospect from NJD, ok. TOR - a 1st and your top young gun.
If Connie only gets offers of a few 3rds, meh, I'd rather keep the lot, enjoy the run to the playoffs (maybe even a series) and watch them all walk.

One thing I'll never understand.
That for some there's a player on the team that they cheer for that they seemingly hate. Hate to the point where you try and ignore all evidence that suggests anything that would take away from that hatred.
You'd think you'd hope for the best of everyone that puts on that jersey, because you know ... you want the team to win.

The Devils sure do make a lot of sense as a trading partner, especially if they put Dougie on LTIR until the playoffs.
Wonder if there's a bigger deal that could involve Markstrom + some $ retained + re-signed Hanafin.

Toronto is not making bigger sweeping plays after inking that Nylander deal, at least not with term.

Wouldn't be happy to see him in Toronto.
He's playing well again and I'm happy for him. I don't want to have to cheer for him to fail again in the playoffs because he's a Leaf.

From the sounds of it, Markstrom is perfectly happy to collect a paycheck and continue to play for us. He's very, very unlikely to win a Stanley Cup here. Give me someone with a real desire to win. As much as I hate the way Tkachuk left, you have to admire his ambition. He knew he'd never win anything here, and wasn't afraid to say that on his way out the door. We just don't have a winning culture. Fans are happy to hear their goalie has a happy home life, and don't care too much about winning.

It's the same as some who say "never trade this player, they've been a great person on and off the ice, they're a leader, every tea. Needs guys like that..."
Some don't want to trade anyone or make any changes to the roster. Over the last couple of years, I dont know how many times someone here said "the answers are in the room" lol
Every player should be available, especially for a team like the Flames. They've had hardly any success yet people want the same guys on the team.
I agree that if they wear a Flames jersey, you should cheer for then. At the same time, I think people should remember that they cheer for the team and no player is above the team. If it makes sense for team success, any player could/should be available for trade.

From the sounds of it, you’re making things up out of thin air to support an unsupportable opinion.

Sorry, if Markstrom is very, very unlikely to win a Stanley Cup here, then so is anyone else, and you’re never going to get anyone with a “real” desire to win.
“I only want guys who want to go somewhere they have a chance to win! Which isn’t here!”
Genius logic.

Yeah, this would be pretty sweet.
It's what I've been hoping for since Wolf forced his way into needing NHL games by owning the AHL for two years straight.
Vladar hasn't done anything to increase his value, and Markstrom spent last season sewering his value. He's rebuilding it this season though, so far.
A contender that Markstrom is willing to waive for offering Conroy a deal he can't refuse is exactly what this team needs right now.

The only time I've heard people say "the answers are in the room" is with a thick tone of sarcasm.

Toronto would break Vladar inside a month.
Markstrom, on the other hand… Marky would be the first goalie Toronto has employed since Belfour who was remotely worthy of the spotlight AND knew he was worthy of it.
That market’s too tough for a guy to “prove” himself - he has to be a made man before he gets there.

If good teams are asking Markstrom or Coleman or Weegar and offering a good return why Conroy can't ask their opinions. Markstrom signed here because length, amount or conditions were better what he received from the market that time. If LA or NYI wants him now, he may be happy go there.

The team is in a forced rebuild due to their UFA situation and have two young goalies who are ready to play regularly. If they have an opportunity to add assets for a “win now” goalie who won’t help them in the future, it’s a no brainer.
