So if the return is more than you think it should be, then your conclusion isn't that you were wrong, it's that the other GM is wrong, and Conroy went into god-mode to get the trade done.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what cognitive dissonance looks like.

I really want to see Nemec in a Flames uniform, get a 3rd Slovak on the team. I doubt that Markstrom at 50% retained would get us that.
I think the Flames would target picks; or a stud 19-24 year old center(Necas, Mercer)/defense(Byram) prospect in a return for Markstrom. We're pretty deep on the wing, but with Lindholm/Hanifin/Tanev leaving, it would be ideal if we had a young player that could step into that role. Like Wolf would at the goaltending position.
I could be overvaluing Markstrom, but he is a top 5 goalie in the league this year, and would give a team 3 runs at the Stanley cup.

NJ is not moving Nemec. Him and Hughes are their top pairing going forward for the next decade or so.

Gonna throw the Leafs into this one too. I suspect something like a 1st and Samsonov with extra goodies attached for every million they retain.

Markstrom has the ability to thrive in the pressure cooker of Toronto but Conroy isn't doing him a single favor. It doesn't make sense.

It does make sense but I’m not sure any GM would want their rumors out there especially if you’re a buyer.

Really? He completely cratered during the battle of Alberta playoff edition. I'm not sure pressure is his thing.

If they are going to retain anything at all on Markstrom, I'd love to get Seamus Casey on top of that 1st.

When treliving was around many here called him the wizard for a few reasons including the perception of getting value from particular trades where we didn’t think that was the value he’d get back. Right or wrong he got particular values back on certain deals including the Tkachuk one. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what I said. I have a particular value of what Markstrom should be worth in the playoffs and if Conroy is astute enough and got more than what I think he’s worth, great. That’s what a board discussion is about right?

Sec doesn’t discount Toronto as an option here, just saying it doesn’t make sense to do Tre/Toronto any favours.
Samsonov + Knies + first ???
Half joking and getting ahead of myself but man… if the Flames packaged a 50% retained Tanev to the deal I could see something materializing with this.

I have heard nothing different than Markstrom is happy here and the Flames don't want to move him. Maybe something happened to change that, maybe an offer came and Markstrom changed his mind. I still would be completely shocked if the Flames trade Markstrom, I am having a hard time buying this one.

CP, the place where you're critiqued for the quality of your GIFs.
At least I chastised him for the vagueness of his (earlier) speculation.

I honestly don't think this is the Flames shopping him.
My read of this situation is this is teams are desparate for goalies and the market might be hot enough that the Flames have to consider it.
