If Conroy is set on Mercer, wouldn't it make sense to send both Hanifin and Markstrom to NJ in a package?

Personally I think it’s a mistake to trade marky. The team has said they won’t rebuild. They are going to try and re-tool and try and make playoffs next year. Markstrom would be a great mentor for wolf next season.

The good thing for Markstrom is there's no urgency. If the deal isn't great, they can wait to see what the market is like next year. Sure there's a risk he falls off. There's also a possibility he gets event better, or a team with better assets to trade develops a need. Some team is going to flop in the POs, or maybe just miss the POs because of goaltending and have pressure to fix it. Next year the retention slots and room will open up again as well, assuming they have to use them on the 3 big pending UFAs this year.

Ya but if Marky is traded they might pivot and rebuild if they just start losing more often.

Maybe there is a very good offer on the table, they need to put feelers out there to see if an even better offer comes up . The timing might make sense to do it while the stakes are high.

Flames play 6 home games from Jan 16-27.
They then don't play games for 10 games when they are on the road Feb 6 in Boston to start a 4 game road trip.
The most logical time for the Flames to trade players is after these six home games. Give time for any new players to get to Calgary and get settled. Gives time for the coaching staff to talk to new players and plan around departing players. Having a long road trip to kick things off afterwards gives any new players time to get to know their teammates.

Thing is...goalies are weird.
If you are getting Vanecek back in a deal you're getting a goalie that's better suited to a split work load with Wolf than Markstrom would want.
If I'm not mistaken Markstrom has said he wants to play and likes to play a lot, he likely doesn't want to play 40-50 games and split it more with Wolf. If you're the Flames you probably also don't want to pay $6M for him just to play 40 games either.
Vanecek is having a down season this year but over three seasons from 20-21 to 22-23 he had a .909 save percentage over 131 GP, over the same three seasons Markstrom had a .907 over 165 games.
There is the potential you can add assets, save on your cap hit, get younger, and open up more opportunity for Wolf...without actually losing much performance from an on-ice perspective if Vanecek bounces back on a new team.
