Jays avoid arbitration with Jansen on $5.2M deal

Jansen is entering his seventh season with the Blue Jays after being selected by the team in the 16th round of the 2013 draft.

Would have loved to see him return as a Jay. Would at least brought some excitement to this miserable offseason.

I thought Stroman said once upon a time that he'd never be a Yank? Or am I mistaking him for someone else? The Jays gotta be sitting on a deal here.

Vladdy has said that. I don't recall Stroman ever saying it.

No, he was pretty salty because Cashman said he wasn't a difference-maker. Money talks though I guess.

Vladdy headed to arbitration. Doubtful they avoid with him being so close to free agency and jays aren’t ’file and trial’.

Can’t say I like it.

re: playing hardball with Vlad. I'm not sure what I feel. On one hand, they've been nice to allow him to keep a hitting coach who hasn't done much for them, to be his personal sideman, while also not chastising him in public. On the other hand they've traded away all his buddies. The Jays clearly have some level of faith in him to pull through. But to potentially go to arbitration over $1,000,000 or 5%? That's a tough one. Probably the Jays subtly or not so subtly saying to him, he hasn't performed to expectations and he's not getting any free money just because of his name and what he's done in the past. It's really forcing him this year to return to normal, else they'll walk away (dare I read too much into this).

Meh. Vladdy isn’t elite. He has one great year. The rest has been good but not great. I won’t be sad if he’s gone.

You're all in to pay $50MM and likely more to Ohanti per year for a decade, yet you're chinsing out on Vlad for 1 year?

If he was asking for $25MM or more sure, he didn't earn that...but $1M difference? As BJ said above, not a great look for this player, or to his teammates, or other players around the league on how the Jays treat core players.

Ohtani is a proven talent.

Vladdy isn’t.

But my point is if going to arbitration pisses off Vladdy so he wants out so be it. He was supposed a generational player. He’s really far from that.

I’d like to keep him but he isn’t who we thought we were getting. So I won’t be heartbroken if he isn’t a Jay.

In fairness to Vlad, he hasn’t come close to those initial expectations, but last year despite another off year he was still getting on base better than most.

I think that a longer term deal is imminent. It seems silly to quibble over $1,000,000.00. Not sure if it'll be a Bo-like deal to get Vladdy to free agency or longer term, but I bet he signs something before arbitration.

He’s two years out from free agency, so that’s all it could be as far as term. I can’t imagine Vlad is looking to extend long term coming off a down year?

Doesn't sound like that's the case at all, reports indicate Jays are trying to sign a multi year deal

(i.e. they did the same thing with Bichette last season, who ultimately sign a 3 year deal)

As for Ohanti vs Vlad, for sure, value is extremely different one is a proven player, other has struggled, who knows if Vlad can be an elite player

Vladdy was supposed to be a core player, and maybe he'll turn things around.

But right now he's an overweight, replacement level 1B who finished 12th of all Jays position players last season with 1.0 fWAR. Biggio had 1.0 fWAR for crying out loud.

Looks like AA is now a Brave until at least 2031.
