Looks like Bedard will miss 15-22 games.
Current stat lines:
Bedard: 39GP 15G, 18A for 33P and -22 (0.85PPG)
Zary: 31GP 9G, 12A for 21P and +13 (0.68PPG)
If Zary continues to play at this pace and Bedard comes back after 15 games Zary would be 2 points back of Bedard and if Bedard comes back after 22 games Zary would be 4 points ahead of Bedard and quite possibly in the rookie scoring lead.
Either way, certainly looks like he's going to be in the conversation at this point.

This is so confusing. I remember suggesting this very scenario could happen, but people here were just so adament that I was wrong. I mean, they were so convincing when they said I didn't know what I was talking about... I just naturally assumed they were right.
Now I don't know what to believe.

You predicted Bedard's injury?

I dunno, man. I just looked through the thread and I don’t see what you could possibly be talking about.

Hmmm, with Bedard out I think Zary has a real chance at this. Leads rookies in +/-, not far off in points and goals. At the very least I like his chances as a runner-up, which would still be quite the result! What a nice surprise he has been this season. A bright light when we really needed one!

I love the optimism but if Bedard doesn't miss too much time he is winning this hands down IMO
Almost a point per game as an 18 year old straight out of junior and he's leading his team in scoring by a country mile, so basically putting up those numbers on his own.
Plus he's got all the 1st overall hype on his side.

If everything goes as planned for Bedard, he only misses 15ish games, and he returns with similar production, you're probably right. But those are big "if's", let's see how it all plays out.
And again, a runner-up finish for Zary (2nd or 3rd) would still be very impressive and make me rather happy. Something the current Flames team doesn't do all that often!

Won't Bedard lose a ton of strength by only drinking milkshakes the next 8 weeks?

Yeah, Bedard will probably miss 20 games and will still finish with about 60 games. If he is anywhere near the top of the rookie scorers with 20 less games played it is a slam dunk.

Saskatoon is just like a really big version of any Canadian prairie town.
When I go there, I still get town vibes. The "town" just stretches out further for some reason.
Reminiscent of old Calgary, which used to have those same town vibes once upon a time.

Bet we see Zary start to raise his game. This could be a good motivator for him to gain leadership and confidence.

I don't think this is at all the scenario you said could happen. Your scenario was Zary leading the Flames in points and the Flames making the POs, leading to some 1st place Calder votes. At the moment Zary is tied for 9th on the Flames and the Flames are on the outside.

Zary has played 10 less games than most other players on the team. He's 3rd in PPG behind Coleman and Kadri. That being said, unless Zary ups his game in a big way or the other competition falls off, he's not beating Bedard or Hughes. I don't see Zary dragging this bunch into the playoffs.
Pretty awesome to have a prospect, who apparently was underserving of playing even a single NHL game last year, get Calder consideration.

I know the games played, but the scenario took that into account, obviously.
