I mean....other than "they can dispense with the old actors and not have to pay the new guys as much."
Because movie/TV studios are obsessed with prequels these days? I guess because you don't have to be creative when you know how things end.
I've heard this is supposed to still be in the "Kelvin" universe even though it takes place before the event creating the alternate timeline - which I translate as "we want to do a prequel because it is safe but we also don't want to have to respect what was done before."

Its just getting ridiculous in the Star Trek Universe.
- Enterprise was a prequel.
- Discovery was a prequel.
- Strange New Worlds is a prequel.
Sorry boys...maybe its time to come up with some new material?

Yeah, sounds stupid. The Kelvin alternate universe has clear kick-off point, anything happening before Star Trek 2009 would be within the main canon. An "origin" story... origin of what? Star Trek has a pretty well-defined fictional history and we've seen all of its most important events on screen except maybe the Romulan War that Enterprise didn't quite get to. Just sounds like some suits sat down and thought it was a good idea.
However, I'll be surprised if this does actually get made. Both Star Wars and Trek have over a decade-long graveyard of "x director has been attached to a new movie! X writer is writing the script and here's some super vague plot detail". Until a cast is in front of a camera I don't count on anything actually happening. I read an article the other day that Patrick Stewart had a script for a Picard movie too.
Its the same problem that they're kind of stuck in in the Star Wars universe.
Star Trek with prequel era stories. I mean I'm ok with it as they develop pre kirk lore. But its getting stagnant.
Star Wars feels like its stuck in the area between ROTJ and TFA and the Galactic Civil War era.
In both cases with risk they have these huge universes with unlimited time lines that they could explore, in Star Wars that don't involve any Skywalkers or Jedi, with Star Trek anything Federation.
I mean there's life outside of the Federation, Worf talked about border guards flying rickity ships. There's a criminal underworld. Hell you can fast forward a 100 years and do the fall of the Federation if you wanted to. You have a whole mirror universe that Discovery desperately tried to wreck.

Every once in a while I think about how horrible JJ Abrams is, and wonder why he is continuously allowed to destroy universally loved things.

JJ went on an incredible win streak, I mean he had Super 8, Cloverfield, the first trek, Lost. He was probably seen as a king maker.
Even his what I call creative busts generated huge dollars. Star Wars the Squeakuel, despite the fact that its pretty much loathed by the Star Wars community still made huge bucks.
