I don't know...feels to me like there is something else going on that maybe happened between him and the organization that we haven't been made aware of.
Flyers are in full on control the narrative mode right now...which whenever I see that happening screams to me that there's more going on.

I get that someone of his age is still very much just a kid, and I say that to say, everyone makes mistakes, but especially kids and young adults are certainly more prone to making immature silly decisions that they feel passionate about in the moment.....ones that lack bigger picture thinking.
That said, someone of his pedigree, has a team of more mature people around him (agent, family, managers, etc...) helping him navigate his career. It cannot be lost on them that this is the type of smoke is something that he wouldn't want as he launches his young promising career around him. I doubt they were naive to how this would look, and the extra pressure having this negativity around this decision will weigh, so I also doubt they took the decision lightly.
I say this all to say, that maybe he is just a miss guided entitled young man who's getting bad advice (at least on the execution part of this) from his team.............but I have a tough time thinking he'd take on all this drama because of a "rookie GM" and "coaching style". Everyone knows coaches have short shelf life, he's going to go through a long list of coaches (ones he likes and doesn't) over his career (likely) so I doubt he's digging in on it in day one. I'm also struggling to think he just didn't want to be in Philly. I get players these days can pick where they play a bit more....but I doubt Philly was viewed as I refuse to go location, for any player.
So he's either, got really bad character, or there's something else at play here and he's actually showing really strong character to do this to himself to stand up for whatever it is he thinks it right. The easiest decision for him would have been to sign in Philly...........he's taken a much more difficult path here, so why did he take it. Because he's young, immature and lacks character, or because of something else? I'd put my money on something else if you made me.

Flames-related, it was mentioned that Bob Murray is now with the Flyers and provided scouting info on the player he drafted, Drysdale

Flyers can't put a gun to the kid's head but at the very least they should provide an explanation of what it is about their organization that the player doesn't like if only to address any issues they may need to work on in the future when it comes to attracting players. Torts isn't going to be there forever so it would seem like a strange decision for a young player to go this far just to avoid the head coach.

I have a feeling that if this was a high pick by the Flames that did this, people here would be blaming the Flames management for not doing their homework at the draft, insisting that if they spoke to the kid, they would have known 100% that the kid has a good chance of pulling something like this.
As for Cutter - screw that kid. I have a new player to cheer against!

I know I am in the minority but I have no problem with individuals having a say on where they work. It seems antiquated to me that a 18 year old has to move to this city because that team owns their rights. It is even worse in the CHL where some 16 year old child from North Battleford had to go to Portland because that is the city that owns his rights. Seems to me that you should have some say on where you live. It is only the best players that have the leverage though in either scenario to dictate where they live.

There would be no league, if everyone got to pick where they played.
Professional sports are singular entities, in that all the teams are part of a single product. And without competitiveness, that product is garbage. As compensation for the horrific misdeed of being told where to live, the players are paid millions of dollars. If they want to live somewhere else, they are already free to (but most seem to accept the trade-off)
Junior hockey is a different argument, and I agree with you there.

We simply don't know, so that's the bottom line.
But in a situation between a 19 year old, who won't even talk to them, and an organization that manages 50 other young men, and seems to have no past history of problems, I am not betting on the kid.

Oh look - it wasn't all just that the player was being childish.
Flyers tried to be cheap with their 5th overall pick, and it burned them.

How would any professional sports league operate with any sort of competitive balance if players had a say where they played coming into the league? It's something that will never happen for pretty obvious reasons. It's a privilege to play in the NHL, not a right, and there are plenty of other professional leagues around the world where they players may be afforded a choice of where to play if they so choose.

So question, because I don't really follow this stuff outside of the Flames dealings. But so curious now, how common / frequent is it that teams wouldn't sign a top pick like that to avoid bonus and burning a year. I feel like top prospects are typically signed or am I wrong?

And the remaining pool of players and cities left without a team can form a new league! But instead of making the same mistake, this new league will have a player draft so the talent can be spread around amongst a larger number of teams, and they can all have some semblance of competitive parity.

I honestly can't think of an example where a top 5 pick wouldn't be signed after 1 year of college and burn a year of the ELC.
Cooley is a recent example but that's because there were questions on if he wanted to sign, not the other way around.
The CHL and international guys get drafted within a month of being drafted, so that's not really an example.
College guys all generally sign to burn that year of their ELC. Flames have done it with Coronato, Gaudreau, tried to with Fox, etc. Happened with Kent Johnson in Columbus.
I honestly can't really think of a time where a player wanted to sign and turn pro after the college season was done and it was the team that went "No, we don't want to sign you"

I seem to recall the Canucks playing hardball with Umberger over rookie bonuses or something and they were forced to trade him.
As for Cooley, originally he didn't want to sign with Arizona, but he changed his mind.
