For me, it's not the cold, it's the conditions. If I were stationary, it would not make a difference. But we have to get from A to B. I can't skid on black ice in +30. I can't fall and break my neck when it's +30. And then having babies and kids make -30 even more unmanagable with all the crap you have to carry to and from the car without dropping anything, forgetting anything, getting frostbite or falling and breaking my neck.

Check out the air quality map and you can see the sand blowing off the Sahara out towards South America.

The warm spell - especially the freezing rain - is what has made walking around outside treacherous. If it had been -5 to -10 for the last month, it would be fine.

I prefer cold weather over hot.
When it is cold, I can layer up and turn on the heat to make myself comfortable.
When it is hot, I can’t sleep, days last forever, work becomes a chore and people become irritable.
The only time I can abide hot weather is if I’m on holiday and can jump in a pool or the sea and my accommodation has aircon.

I'm thinking I need to start keeping crampons as part of my car emergency kit. My current one is mainly blanket, USB jump starter, tire pump and steel core shovel. Crampons would help a lot in many car pushing situations.

Gross. Even -39 forecasted in Calgary is quite rare and notable.
A lot of people like to quote windchills as an exaggeration of the temperature, which is a peeve of my pedantic self. "It was minus FORTY!". No it wasn't. It was -29 and windy.
But these are actual temperatures and are quite extreme, even for around here.

Day to day life is just more annoying when it's extremely cold.
Getting an Uber takes an hour. Public transit starts to disintegrate. Cars won't start. Outdoor jobs become a challenge when equipment starts to fail. Life carries on normally at +30.
I understand that far more people die worldwide of heatwaves primarily because society overall is not dumb enough to live in frigid climates en masse, but nobody's health is at risk being unprotected in +30. Conversely, our Friday night windchill of -46 is quite dangerous for anyone outdoors.

We didn't hit -30C at all last year. And now we will have a high lower than that.

That's a nasty forecast even if only for 4 days (hope that part is right and it does not stretch out longer). I'm not sure I've seen -39° since moving to Calgary. Saw it plenty of times living in north and central Alberta, it's not fun.

Only true for a 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol, which is fairly rare for most cars built in the last 20 years or so.

I looked up several pre-mixed coolants that is the spec.
