What about it - they’ve got $33M in expiring contracts this year alone.
Bertuzzi - $5.5M
Domi - $3M
McCann - $762k
Brodie - $5M
Gio - $800k
Lagesson - $775k
Jones - $875k
Muzzin (LTIR) - $5.625M
Matt Murray (LTIR) - $4.687M
Klingberg (LTIR) - $4.15M
Samsonov (buried) - $2.4M
A dramatic reshape of the roster beyond their stars is quite doable.
Hopefully Tre ducks it up.

You still have to ice a team...and those LTIR's won't get them back cap space lol...they are OVER the cap and using those to get under now
even if it was...33M for 11 players with 1 quality D man and no goaltender
GL with that
What D core are you building though free agency?

Not really, Pastrnak signed less than a year ago. The cap situation was the same. Pastrnak averages 88 points per season, Nylander is at 71. They're the same age.
Nylander's production in the past 3 years, and also for their whole careers, is a lot closer to that or Sam Reinhart.

Fair. But they’re not that much different in contract per year. $250,000 is a rounding error. Pastrnak is Nylander with a little more physicality. They’re close in how they play.

At the very least though, their team makeup will be ... interesting. They have $66M committed and 12 players next year. Only 3 D under contract. 4 RFAs to sign or dump. No goalie signed other than Hildeby. And they can't sign anyone to long term deals without affecting the Marner room (and Tavares if they want a further extension). It's a real "chips pushed in" move for the next 1.5 years, except they have very little wiggle room to rent for this year.

His 1.11 PPG over the last 3 seasons ranks 18th in the NHL but it's below the other major wingers that would be his comparables and he makes more than all of them, even if you only look at contracts signed over the past 2 years.
Pastrnak: 1.28 PPG - $11.25M
Rantanen: 1.25 PPG - ??? (Making $9.25 now)
Tkachuk: 1.24 PPG - $9.5M
Kaprizov: 1.19 PPG - ??? (Making $9.0 now)
Robertson: 1.17 PPG - $7.75M (Bridge)
Forsberg: 1.08 PPG - $8.5M (Might actually be his best comparable IMO)
I'll include these two as well because even though they've struggled they were the most recent prominent wingers to sign UFA deals as wingers.
Gaudreau: $9.75M - 1.07 PPG in the three years prior to his deal
Huberdeau: $10.5M - 1.25 PPG in the three years prior to his deal
I feel like it could have been argued that $10.5M would have been an overpayment - let alone $11.5M.

Every team needs role players. Who else are you going to get to plan the parties for less than $1.35M?

Matthews deal is fine, but he got taken on the term.
Nylander deal is buyout proof and will be paying him in his age 30 seasons for 6 years at a heavy cap hit.
For someone who was described a person who grinds agents down to get a fair number it seems like he has been taken for a ride with his last 3 big contracts.

He's not in the range of Matthews, Mackinnon, McDavid, or Pastrnak...and the other two were overpayments to get a guy in UFA.
Nobody else could give Nylander anything close to $92M - which is a $13M AAV on a 7 year contract. Treliving really isn't taking advantage of the benefit of the 8th year in these negotiations IMO. Really feels like this contract should have been at most the same as Huberdeau and around $10.5M. But he's getting an extra $1M.
|
Just because someone signed an $11M contract 6 years ago, it doesn't mean they're an $11M player today.
Nylander is an $11M player. McDavid is probably a $15M player. Matthews' new deal is $13M. Pasta's the only realy argument you can make, as he just signed for $11M - but that was a discount, and Nylander is just fair market value.
You also have to remember that this contract was negotiated with everyone knowing that the cap is going way up. Today's $11M is very quickly going to be tomorrow's $9M.

You forgot the best winger in the game. Kucherov at $9.5 (signed in 2018). 1.47 PPG over the last 2.5 seasons.

So treliving has to build 2/3 of his blue line this summer through FA and trades? This should be good.

Kind of intentionally left him out - because his contract was signed so long ago - and unlikely that he has another big contract that would be a comparable.

exactly
Tre will probably overpay Tanev who, to be honest isn't looking so hot lately...bring back Gio at 800k. Overpay Talbot and find some league min bottom six players
Cup contenders? I don't think so
Without their OT and 3 on 3 points they aren't even a good team now
What I'm saying is they won't be a legit contender unless they trade a big name up front but they "can't do that" so we will have this conversation again in the spring, and next season, and the following season.

Fair enough. It will be interesting to see what he makes if he keeps his pace up, at 33-34. For a guy who missed a lot of games over his career, injuries don't seem to slow him much.
For records sakes, there's also Ovie who signed in 2021 for 5 years at $9.5, Chuckie and Stone also at $9.5.

Colorado hates this contract more than anyone is my guess, because I'm sure they were using Pastrnak's contract as a bit of a ceiling for that type of winger.
And now Nylander just broke that ceiling and Rantanen can say he's better.

Next season Draisaitl and the year after McDavid. Oilers are screwed and I love it.

all the media pumping won't help either
"2 best players in the game"
2 highest contracts, it's only fair

IDK there seems to be a difference pay scale in Canada and in the US

CapFriendly is showing the Leafs with 12 roster players signed for next season with $21 million in cap space.
If you take about $5 million for 6 players making near league minimum, that leaves them $16 million to sign 4 players. If they spend about $6 million on 2 goalies, that leaves $10 million to spend on a couple of d-men. That's workable, especially if they can get a couple players to take discounts to fulfill their dreams of playing for the Leafs.
With the cap going up 5% per year for the foreseeable future, these big deals eat up a lower percentage of the cap as time goes on too.

For some strange reason a lot of Oilers fans seem to think that Draisaitl is going to take a discount to stay with McDavid ignoring the fact that he's been massively underpaid over his career to this point. He's going to be looking to recoup some of that money and become the highest paid player until McDavid sets the next bar.
