Oh I meant fine by staying within the cap. They’ll still have crappy goaltending and Reilly as the only legitimate top 2 D man on the team. They’re going to be bad again unlesss they can land a solid D or goaltender in the off-season, which is going to be a bit difficult when you’ve got so much money tied to 4 players, 5 if you want to include Reilly.

You never know about guys quitting which is a risk but given his play for years after he got out of his early contact avoidance days, he should be fine.

NHL players are very fortunate in this regards. Basketball and football players do not get guaranteed contracts of this length.
It surprises me how often the market doesn’t seem to reflect any meaningful discount when these guys sign 8 year deals.

Knies Matthews and Marner have the most TOI this year and they play against the best defenders. Nylander is on pace for 120 points on the 2nd line. Similar to Huberdeau in Florida being a 115 point player…on the 2nd line.

You’re right, but where I think there’s a differentiation is Nylander can easily play in the first line and he makes his own plays while playing hard. There’s some risk but he fits in well on that team. I don’t think on a championship you want him as your first option but on the Leafs he’s interchangeable as his skill and work ethic are there. Huberdeau is in a bad system for his style and skill set.

I totally agree too that Nylander is in a great spot on the leafs and it shows in his point production. I do think you would see a significant drop off in points if he were to be put on the first line, even with his skill and work ethic. I don’t believe it would be as significant of a drop as Huberdeau however.

Will be interesting to see how they handle this. Wonder if they move Marner at some point.

Good luck with that, full NMC and a local boy.

This doesn't get Toronto any closer to a cup, so I like it.
Happy for Nylander, I enjoy watching him play hockey. Would've liked him in Calgary for sure, and part of me hoped we would trade for him when it looked like he may be available near the start of the season. Seeing how this contract negotiation has gone, I'm relieved that Nylander in Calgary never came to fruition.

The difference is Toronto’s expensive guys are good.if they were paying Matthews $11M to put up 40 points the Leafs would be struggling too.

Outside of Karlsson, I'd say they're all worth it as well. Pasta is just shy at $11.25
Mackinnon: 2nd in points, 8th in goals
McDavid: 5th in points (tied for 49th in goals...)
Panarin: 3rd in points, 4th in goals
Matthews: 15th in points, 1st in goals
Karlsson only has 27 points.
Nylander is currently 6th in points...so, it fits in my eyes.

just asking
although
1. Is Nylander going to stay 6th in points?
2. Again how do the Leafs improve their team?
Their D and Goaltending right now isn't good enough to win, not even close IMO
I think at that price you want him over 100 points a year every year, especially for the first few

If the Leafs' job was to win the Stanley Cup, they would have folded decades ago. They are the only Original Six franchise that has never even been to the finals since expansion began.
Their job is to keep the Canadian media saturated with Leafs coverage and give their fanboys something to gush over. Signing Nylander helps with that.

Yeah, it's a fair question but the solution isn't to not sign Nylander. The defence is the bigger concern, as goalies...well, it's a crapshoot as to who gets hot in the playoffs.
With Nylander, this is what they're looking at:
FORWARDS (12)
Right Wing: William Nylander ($11,500,000) - Mitchell Marner ($10,903,000) - RW#3 - Ryan Reaves ($1,350,000)
Centre: Auston Matthews ($13,250,000) - John Tavares ($11,000,000) - David Kämpf ($2,400,000) - Pontus Holmberg ($800,000)
Left Wing: Matthew Knies ($925,000) - LW#2 - Calle Järnkrok ($2,100,000) - LW#4
13th Forward
DEFENSE (6)
Right: RHD #1 - RHD#2 - Conor Timmins ($1,100,000)
Left: Morgan Rielly ($7,500,000) - LHD #2 - Jake McCabe ($2,000,000)
7th Defenceman
GOALTENDER (2)
Goalie #1
Joseph Woll ($766,667)
DETAILS
Roster Size: 12
Salary Cap: $87,675,000
Cap Hit: $65,594,667
Cap Space: $22,080,333
Treliving has his work cut out for him, but he's also in Toronto and they get some sweet heart deals every Summer it seems.
If you start looking at things, they'll be in a pretty good spot (random UFA options selected, just showing it's possible):
FORWARDS (12)
Right Wing: William Nylander ($11,500,000) - Mitchell Marner ($10,903,000) - Jordano Eberle ($4,000,000) - Ryan Reaves ($1,350,000)
Centre: Auston Matthews ($13,250,000) - John Tavares ($11,000,000) - David Kämpf ($2,400,000) - Pontus Holmberg ($800,000)
Left Wing: Matthew Knies ($925,000) - Anthony Duclair ($3,000,000) - Calle Järnkrok ($2,100,000) - AJ Greer ($900,000)
Bobby McMann ($775,000)
DEFENSE (6)
Right: Christopher Tanev ($4,500,000) - TJ Brodie ($4,000,000) - Conor Timmins ($1,100,000)
Left: Morgan Rielly ($7,500,000) - Mark Giordano ($800,000) - Jake McCabe ($2,000,000)
Troy Stetcher ($775,000)
GOALTENDER (2)
Cam Talbot ($3,000,000)
Joseph Woll ($766,667)
DETAILS
Roster Size: 22
Salary Cap: $87,675,000
Cap Hit: $87,344,667
Cap Space: $330,333
So it's totally doable for them to improve around the edges. I think the fact that Tanev sounds like he could be/would be open to extending there is one of the reasons Treliving SHOULD make the splash this season to acquire him - don't let him go elsewhere and extend, don't let him stay in Calgary and extend - acquire and extend him. That guy would stabilize their defence in a pretty big way.

That team doesn't look like a cup winner either...assuming they sign all those guys, which they won't
that D is still absolutely terrible and Talbot is only good with a decent defensive team IMO
they need to trade one of their forwards, or not...I am happy with them losing every year

Yeah, it's just an example of who they could sign.
I don't think they have to trade one of their forwards. I think they can do it without making such a move.
You're not trading Marner, Matthews, Tavares, or Nylander. Those are top tier guys, and Tavares will likely extend the following season for a more reasonable cap-hit as well (while Marner probably stays somewhere around $11M).
Toronto seems to be a desirable destination, so they've got that going for them when it comes to bargain/risk-free short term UFA contract as well

"can do it"
like can ice a team under the cap?
sure, but not a cup contender...couple more years of early exits and surely the "we can't trade so and so" logic goes away.

You got them all.
That said, if you look strictly at salary, there are a few more players:
Dahlin, Pasta - $13M
Hamilton- $12.6M
Jones, Pietrangelo - $12.5M
Aho, Fox, Point, Nurse($2M more than McDavid next year), Barkov - $12M
Werenski, McAvoy - $11.5M
