If you draft a player there should be some type of benefit when it comes to their contract and counting against the cap. Especially to try to help smaller market teams keep players they drafted and developed.
Maybe it's 10%...maybe it's 15% but if you draft a star player you should be able to have some type of advantage when keeping them that's more than "you can give them an 8th year".
I think if you draft the player and are re-signing them you should get a break on their cap hit. Drafted player signing for $8M, then you should get a break on that against your cap hit (aka only counts $7.2M against the cap with the 10% buffer).
That would help smaller markets keep the players they draft a lot more than them being able to offer an extra year, or reducing the contract length to a 5 or 6 year max. Also allows teams that drafted well and built a good core of players more flexibility to keep those players under the cap, instead of being forced to trade players you drafted and developed because of a cap crunch.
|
This would help large market teams as much as small market teams, as it means more money could be spent above the cap number. And large market teams have more money to spend.

Again, the old guard will do old guard things and the smart people will be taking advantage of them.

Unfortunately I don't think the Flames (as an organization) are the smart people taking advantage of the old guard... we're more likely the old guard being taken advantage of.

The Ronni over Hutson one is unforgiveable to me though.
Ronni had poor production in Finland, and this organization needed a top offensive defenseman prospect so badly, with the pipeline being pretty slim at the time.
I remember on CP nobody thought Hutson would make it to 59 but when Hutson fell to 59 it seemed like the obvious pick. Especially since it was discussed Hutson was one of the guys the Flames interviewed at the combine that week.

I would have been looking forward to trading his rights to the Rangers for a 2nd round pick next year, that's for sure.

Ronni was such a terrible pick, I had blacked that one out of my mind.
Hutson was right there on a golden platter, the only thing I can’t think that would make the flames pass was his interview revealing he wanted to play in the US or something… but then again the kid was stoked that MTL drafted him

Surprised the Flames didn't pick him up.
We are going to be trading away a couple defencemen soon right?

In that case even if it turns out like Fox and he gets two seconds in return that's still a better pick than Ronni.

No, not at all. First time poster, yes, but a long time reader. Believe it or not, lots of folks on this forum really dislike having to wade through the bickering to get to interesting and insightful contributions on the team they cheer for. I’m not a fan of Spurs or his posting style at all. I just don’t understand why someone would essentially invite him to sidetrack this thread yet again so that they can complain about, and engage him further.
I mean what’s the point in that?

Looks like Yoda forgot his teachings lol
For the record; there has been a number of posts since the Gaudreau occurrence that have been directed at dissentowner and needless to say it’s gotten quite old. The fact that posters here are willing to glean a little light into their inside knowledge is beyond appreciated by the vast majority and snarky comments taking shots at posters because something they’ve been told doesn’t happen is embarrassing anymore.
Just want to let those who give us the goods on rumours know that this poster is highly appreciative as many others are and please don’t let the usual suspects dissuade you!

Just here to point out how funny it is for someone’s second post to include “believe it or not, a lot of people on this forum (believe ___)” in response to someone who has been on the forum since 2006.

So your solution was to bicker about the bickering? From a guy who took a shot at dissentowner for ‘making stuff up’ seeing you come to the defence of posters you’re not a fan of who actually do this is hilarious.
If you wanted to re-rail the thread your best bet is to bring things back on topic rather than pouring gasoline on the fire.

Ronni has size. Flames have been trending towards bigger players in recent drafts. Passing on smaller skilled guys for bigger players (strongren over stankoven).
Comes with perils as you might be missing on gems. But recent cup winners are built with bigger players. Just a matter of picking the right players with size and upside, and avoiding the Cole Huckins of the world.
