If there was a rule I wish existed it would be "Drafted Player Status"
If you draft a player there should be some type of benefit when it comes to their contract and counting against the cap. Especially to try to help smaller market teams keep players they drafted and developed.
Maybe it's 10%...maybe it's 15% but if you draft a star player you should be able to have some type of advantage when keeping them that's more than "you can give them an 8th year".
I think if you draft the player and are re-signing them you should get a break on their cap hit. Drafted player signing for $8M, then you should get a break on that against your cap hit (aka only counts $7.2M against the cap with the 10% buffer).
That would help smaller markets keep the players they draft a lot more than them being able to offer an extra year, or reducing the contract length to a 5 or 6 year max. Also allows teams that drafted well and built a good core of players more flexibility to keep those players under the cap, instead of being forced to trade players you drafted and developed because of a cap crunch.

That would make trading players almost impossible / non-existent.
I get what you're going for, but I think it would cause more harm than good

I wish one rule the Flames had internally was:
Don't trade draft picks for players, only trade players for draft picks.
If you're drafting and development is on point you would be a perennial powerhouse.

The Hurricanes have kind of operated by their own rules. They haven't won a cup under Dundon's ownership but they have been a good team for a while now and should be good for some time. Fan support has never been better for the team and they are probably as close to ideal as there is. Not sure why other teams haven't tried to emulate what they are doing.

Yep.
Drafted 33 players from 2019-2021 then picked "only" 7 in 2022 and went back to drafting 10 more in 2023.
All while making the playoffs, winning division titles and multiple playoff rounds.
Good young team, and a loaded prospect pool.

Because they haven’t won a Cup yet. And I’m not saying that to criticize Dundon’s approach. It’s just how traditional hockey brass think. Which his why I hope the Canes do win the Cup - it would shake up the league’s mindset.

I hope the league’s mindset stays as is for as long as possible to maximize the amount of time that market inefficiencies exist.
Again, the old guard will do old guard things and the smart people will be taking advantage of them.

Agreed. This is why Carolina is my East team, if having to pick one to cheer for. Hard to dislike how that organization has been run.

They are also trying to capitalize on inefficiencies in who they pick, which you can do if you have an butt load of picks.
They draft a lot of players out of Russia, particularly the last few years:
- 5 last year (out of 10 picks)
- 4 in 2022 (out of 7 picks)
And then they draft small skilled players. You can't have a team of small players but you also only need 1 or 2 of these to hit.
- In 2023 their first 3 picks were all <6 feet including Jaydon perron at 5'9. And then they grabbed Timur Mukhanov, generously listed as 5'8 at 163.
I love what they do. Stockpile picks so you can take bigger swings with them. I wish the Flames would do the same.

Drafting is one of the few areas of the Flames I’d leave as is from the Treliving era. I’m a little nervous it will change under Conroy.

I have to say I'm pretty annoyed the Flames didn't claim Bjornfot.
This organization is lacking young defensive prospects and you had a 22 year old, former first round pick, being waived by a division rival. A guy who has already played 117 NHL games and was seen as a top prospect until his game fell off a bit in recent years.
How is that not better than Gilbert, Oesterle, or Desimone? Even if he's not better today he's a better long term bet for the Flames, especially with Hanifin and Tanev potentially moving soon.
And oh look Vegas took him on waivers...that never works out for them when they pick up other teams unheralded players. SMH

Not to mention we are rumoured to be trading 2 of our defenceman (we better be) and Oesterle hasn't looked great. Imagine Oesterle as our #4...
Edit: Sorry, I guess you did mention potentially trading Hanifin and Tanev. Was missed in my keys of fury. LOL

For the most part I agree, but give them more picks.
And I think they need to poke at how to hit more in the 2nd round. We are dealing with a small number of picks, but it seems to me that perhaps they have been too safe with those picks. I'm not one to get tunnel vision on a certain prospect in the draft, but Stromgren over The Stank, and Ronni over Lane Huston (though they may have been worried about a Re-Fox) is puzzling to me. I liked the Morin pick so perhaps shifts under Conroy.
For me the 2nd is the precise time for home run swings. Because their are always guys in the 2nd that have high end potential, but likely have a flaw that causes them to drop. But picking those guys is how you end up with a Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov, Adam Fox (3rd I know), etc.

Oesterle is a tank commander, I have faith. Playing this dude 20 minutes a night will lead us to celebrini!
I was hoping to read rumors or trade speculation in here, but instead have 4 pages of speculation on Treliving and general manager habits and some new CBA rule suggestions. Perhaps better for some than debating incessantly with an infantile moron, but unlikely so for the skimming masses.

The 2006 cup run solidified the Canes as my second favourite team. Being in Edmonton during game 7 was glorious.

Stromgren over Stankoven I can kind of get...you took a smaller forward with Coronato in the first round. Stankoven really hadn't blown up yet, and hadn't played at all that year due to COVID. Stromgren had okay production in Sweden for his age in his Draft year but regressed after that which was the problem.
The Ronni over Hutson one is unforgiveable to me though.
Ronni had poor production in Finland, and this organization needed a top offensive defenseman prospect so badly, with the pipeline being pretty slim at the time.
I remember on CP nobody thought Hutson would make it to 59 but when Hutson fell to 59 it seemed like the obvious pick. Especially since it was discussed Hutson was one of the guys the Flames interviewed at the combine that week.

I’m a little torn on their 23 draft but that’s mainly because I’m still scared by the big = good Sutter years. I hope Conroy doesn’t prioritize size over skill
