Default Pens Trade Report

The Pittsburgh Penguins Trade Report: After a promising run to the cup finals this past season, the Pens have decided to keep their core group together and build from there. However that being said the Pens are always open to trade any player on the roster if the price is right. Here is a list of who are/are not being shopped, and what the price tag is.

Cheapy Cheapy
  • Chad Kilger – can be had for a 5th round pick if you think he can help your club. We have no room to bring him back to our team so if he can help you, come get him. WAIVED
  • Richard Park- Same as Kilger TRADED
Available
  • Martin Gelinas- was great for us down the stretch and in the playoffs. Still putting up great 3rd line numbers in the NHL. Is a great PK man and can help any team looking to get to the next level.
  • Scott Nichol – Cheap depth player for the 4th line, would want the same type of player in return or a prospect.
  • Martin Straka – Still a PPG player in the NHL and a monster in the sim, he can be moved but I would need someone back who can replace his offense.TRADED
  • Jamie Heward- very cheap and versatile player who can play any position on the ice. I would want a cheap depth guy back or a pick(s)/prospect(s) type of deal.
  • Brian Willsie- See Gelinas
  • Francis Bouillon – solid defensive dman with some grit and a good contract, would move him for a younger guy with some upside.
  • Sami Kapanen- Very versatile player who plays a great 2 way game and can play any position on the ice. One of the best skaters in the NHL. Can be had for the right package of youth. TRADED
  • Martin Gerber – After a slow NHL start he caught fire and if it was not for Ray Emery’s stellar play would have easily regained his #1 status. Very similar to Biron’s situation in Buffalo before he was traded. Gerber finished the NHL season with the exact same GAA and save % that made him one of the top goalies in the NHL in Carolina. Would make a solid #1 for anyone needing help between the pipes.TRADED
In the Pens plans but can be moved

1.Jason Spezza – Probably the least likely player to be moved off the Pens. Spezza was arguably the best player in the entire CPHL last season potting 48 goals, and is becoming a legitimate superstar in the NHL. It would take something that really blew me away to even think about moving Spezza.
2.Saku Koivu – Koivu has a NTC combined with his chemistry with Spezza, his career year in the NHL, and the fact he is one of my favorite players it is very unlikely Koivu goes anywhere.
3.Mikael Samuelsson- Probably the biggest bargain in the entire CPHL. It would be hard to move Samuelsson given what he brings to the table for his salary.
4.Christopher Higgins- Turning into a solid two-way player that can finish his scoring chances as well as his checks. I am a huge Higgins fan, unlikely he moves.
5.David Vyborny – Coming off back-to-back NHL campaigns of leading the Jackets in Points and really coming into his own in the CPHL as well, it is unlikely that we will move David unless a similar player with a similar contract comes back.
6.Steve Begin- Solid energy player and signed for just above league minimum, Begin will likely stay around for financial reasons.
7.Milan Hejduk- Best pure goal scorer on the Pens and still a force in the NHL, it will take someone with star power and a nice contract coming back our way to move Milan.
8.Dainius Zubrus – He is a power forward that our roster lacks, and his big bodied presence plus his ability to perform in the NHL and CPHL makes him a huge part of our team. TRADED
9.Chris Chelios – Chelly has been a part of our team for a longtime and the ageless wonder seems to be prepared to play until he is 50. For the contract he has and the intangibles he brings it is unlikely that we move Chris.
10.Rostislav Klesla- Rusty looks to be the future of our defense. It will take a promising young defender coming back to make us want to move him.
11.Andrei Markov- One of the most underrated defensemen in the NHL, Andrei is a great 2 -way player and a personal favorite, given his contract he will be a hard guy for me to move.
12.Brian Rafalski – Brian is a true #1 defender and is signed up to a great contract, he will not be leaving Pittsburgh unless another #1 dman comes back.
13.Greg Zanon- Zanon burst on the scene this past NHL season and became a regular in a solid Nashville defensive corps. Given his age and contract I would need a similar young dman with a promising upside to move him.
14.Olaf Kolzig – Ollie the goalie is revitalized with all the youth he is surrounded by in Washington. He is playing like a man in his prime in both the NHL and CPHL and after leading the Pens to the finals it is unlikely that he goes anywhere.

Prospects:
It is very unlikely that Carey Price or Nicklas Backstrom will be going anywhere. All other prospects can be had for a similar guy.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are pleased to announce their first trade of the offseason. The Pens have shipped out veteran dman Adam Foote to the Winnipeg Jets for Forward Jochen Hecht. GM Goffie had this to say about the deal:
Quote:
This trade came down to a finincial need moreso then a need for change. Adam was HUGE for us last season and was one of the reasons why we were so successful. It hurts having to lose his leadership and defensive play, but looking at our defense corps and salary structure it was a deal that made sense to us. We are looking at starting the season with a cap of about 75mill after sponsorhips and playoff money come into factor and we needed to trim some payroll to get there. We feel that Jochen is a solid fit with this team and he is a player that can play in any roll asked of him, we look forward to having him on board.

After assesing our roster and looking at what we have and what we want our team to look like we have decided to shop Martin Straka. Martin has been great for us and us great in the sim. Straka also had back to back 70+ point seasons in the NHL and is showing no sign of slowing down.

We are looking for a first round pick and a young forward with solid upside in return. Let me know if you have what we are looking for.

The Islanders would like to make it known that they have no interest in "Marty" Straka.

The Islanders will however, be dealing with Goffie and the Pens soon enough...

The Pens are pleased to announce that they have made their second trade of the offseason. In a minor swap the Pens send winger/defenseman Sami Kapanen to Colmbus in exchange for third line forward Andy Hilbert. This move was made for cap purposes, and we would like to thank Sami for his strong play down the stretch for us and his stellar playoff performance.

Jackets decided to eat a bit of cap to acquire a more experienced veteran forward who is an upgrade and is also very versatile. To acquire a similar player as a free agent we'll have to pay the same salary and so far the asking price on this type of pending UFA has been a bit high for our liking. We thank the Pens for the deal, and wish them and Hilbert all the best in the coming season.

The Pens have made their 3rd and 4th deals of the offseason.

In the first deal the Penguins have sent veteran goalie Martin Gerber and a 2008 3rd to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for prospect Igor Grigorenko and Mathieu Garon. We feel that although we take a slight downgrade in net on this deal that the risk/reward factor of Grigorenko is worth a shot, we all know he has not been the same since his accident, but we are hoiping that a full recovery leads him to play like his oldself on the ice."

In the second deal the Pens have acquired young 2 way forward Ryan Kelser and a 1st round pick for forward Jochen Hecht. "We felt that we could afford to downgrade our forward crew in order to get us into a solid draft postion for this draft. We are not sure if Ryan remains in our plans yet or not."

That's a decent gamble on Garon I think. Gerber's gonna have to find a starting role somewhere else soon or stay in the backup role in Ottawa with Emery there, while Garon has a better chance at snagging the starting job in LA, although he'll likely be battling LaBarbera come training camp.

Good call. Personally, I think that the job is Garon's to lose.... Also, this probably sounds out of left field.... but I think that LA is a real sleeper in the NHL next year and it wouldn't surprise me if they snuck into the 7th or 8th spot next year (Provided that thier goaltening...aka Garon holds up.).

It's a bit of a gamble... but of Garon comes to play and Grigorenko devleops like he should... than that's a good lookin deal.

Garon is a pending UFA in the NHL isn't he? I suppose he could stay in L.A. where he'd basically have a gimme to win the starting job from Cloutier. But I suspect that given injury and his inability to carry the load thus far that Lombardi might seek out a different number one somewhere else. Basically a make or break season coming up for Garon where he eithre becomes a starter, or a career backup.

Yes he is. I agree with you, the Kings will likley look at options for a number one, possibly a Gerber, Toskala, Bryzgalov if possible, then failing that, look to Garon.

I think ultimately, they bring in a guy who is not expensive and can play solid enough and long enough for Bernier to develop and possibly take over. The way young goalies develop though, that could be awhile.

I've heard rumblings that San Jose isn't entertaining losing their tandem. As much as both want to be starters, it sounds like the Sharks want to keep the two together.

Dainius Zubrus has been placed on the block. Danuis had a solid NHL campaign posting a career high 60 points and is a SIM monster potting over 70 points each of the last threee CPHL seasons. Drop me a line if you need offense!
Zubrus's CPHL Stats
04-05

TOT 87GP 31G 47A 78PTS +26
05-06
TOT 85GP 19G 51A 70PTS +20
06-07
TOT 77GP 25G 48A 73PTS +15

The Pens have made 3 more deals that they would like to announce:

The first deal sees Jochen Hecht head to Chicago in return for Ryan Kesler and a 1st round pick.

The Pens then sent Kelser, along with 2 of the top six forwards that lead them to the cup finals, Martin Straka and Dainus Zubrus and a 2nd round pick to Florida in return for young star Rick Nash and the #3 overall draft pick.

GM Goffie had this to say: "We like to look at these two as one big deal, we look at it as trading Straka, Hecht, Zubrus and a 2nd to land us Rick Nash, the #3 overall draft pick and the #6 overall draft pick. We feel like this deal is a great deal for our future, and we look forward to adding Nash's presence up front. "

The Pens made another deal on Sunday adding veteran forward Mike Sillinger in exchange for Andy Hilbert and a 5th round pick.

"We feel that Mike makes up for some of the depth we lost in our other deals. Mike is coming off great NHL and CPHL seasons of 26 goals after a 32 goal NHL season the previous year. He is a guy who can provide veteran leadership and can be used in any and all situations."

The Pens made a minor deal to sure up their blueline depth on Wednesday. The Pens sent prospect Franz Neilson to the Florida Panthers in exchange for defensive defenseman Andreas Lilja.

"We feel that with Lilja's strong DF rating he will be a great 3rd pairing guy for us. Franz had a shot at our roster next season, but we feel that defense was the more pressing need for us to fill."

Martin Gelinas/Brian Willsie- was great for us down the stretch and in the playoffs. Still putting up great 3rd line numbers in the NHL. Is a great PK man and can help any team looking to get to the next level.

Both these guys can improve any teams 3rd line Gelinas was a 74 last season and Willsie was a 73. Gelinas put up 44 NHL points last season his highest totals since 2002. Gelinas is the ultimate 3rd line player who can be played in any situation.
