Good thing there are multiple teams listed for all our trade chips. Lots of players on that report have “TBD”.

Going back to the Eichel trade. It was viewed as a way to maybe keep Johnny and or Tkachuk.
I had some inside info on the johnny talks that led me to believe he was not resigning and I was publicly roasted over my subsequent position to trade him for whatever and focus hard on signing Tkachuk. I will admit that I was also taken in by the Tkachuk trade and thought it was the best we could possibly hope for!! I am sure there are many others who were of the same mind as me. Elated. Now, it turned out poorly, but I don't think it was wrong to have hope after that trade was made.
I still think trading Monahan + 1st for Kadri is where we really dug the hole. But, I understand why we did it in light of trying to continue being a contender.

No one is saying htere wasn't a debate and posters on both sides. It's the "as clear as day" crap, implying that any other opinion was stupid that is objectionable, and untrue. And then the gaslighting that the topic is not about the Huberdeau trade and contract per se.

Keep in mind that Jones is historically not good, Woll is a rookie, and Hildeby probably isn't ready yet for the NHL. Leafs probably want a proven NHLer at least.

Teams in LTIR:

Lightning: $390k (No players returning to fit in)
Avalanche: $5.7M (Lehkonen - $4.5M)
Vegas: $3.5M (Theodore - $5.2M)
Capitals: $5.2M (Oshie - $5.7M, Milano - $1.9M)
Canucks: $3.7M (Soucy - $3.2M)
Kings: $3.3M (Arvidsson - $4.25M)
Penguins: $2.9M (Rust - $5.1M)
Bruins: $2.7M (Forbort - $3.0M)
Islanders: $9.9M (Pulock - $6.2M, Pelech - $5.8M)
Oilers: $1.0M (No players returning to fit in)
Rangers: $6.5M (Chytil - $4.4M, Kakko - $2.1M)
So the problem for the Flames is all these teams have no cap space, aren't accruing cap space, and the players they have returning are important pieces. So unless they are done for the season you need to leave room to fit them back in.
Flames will have to retain, and likely take a bad contract back if they want to be able to deal with any of these teams. Big thing here though is any of these teams have no incentive to wait until the deadline to make a deal, they aren't accruing cap space anyways so really they can make a trade now if they are going to remain in LTIR anyways.
Teams Accruing Cap Space
Dallas: $37K / $100k
St. Louis: $1.1M / $2.9M
New Jersey: $1.5M / $4.0M
Winnipeg: $1.9M / $4.9M
Flyers: $2.3M / $6.7M
Panthers: $1.3M / $6.0M
Hurricanes: $3.2M / $8.3M
Detroit: $4.3M / $10.9M
Arizona: $6.0M / $15.5M
Nashville: $14.6M / $37.6M
These are the teams where waiting until the deadline would probably garner the biggest return on a trade. The cap accumulation plus possible retention will make it easier for teams to fit guys in then.
Overall though as much as I'd love to see a trade here right away this view make it tough to see exactly how it's going to happen.
|
I don't think the Flames have any issue retaining on the pending UFAs, at least, they shouldn't. Markstrom would be a cap hit for a couple more years so it's a tougher pill. As for bad contracts back, it is the same - it's term dependant. If it's a bad contract with a year left, great.

Flames better be getting something along with Parayko if he somehow ends up here

He has an NTC so he can save us from ourselves.
No idea how that 7 year deal got rated higher than Tanev’s expiring deal.

Do other teams covet Vladar? Hopefully, this is the Flames just F-ing with Trev. He calls everyday asking about Vladar. The Flames tell him they are seling today:

Parayko is an Alberta kid, grew up in St. Albert. My guess is he would waive to come to Calgary.

Its not hindsight if you were thinking it before the outcome unfolded...
And many, including the media talking heads, were predicting a drop from Hubrrdeau. Many thought it was a wildcard team with no young elite talent. Manu though going alll in on hubrdeau, kadri and weegar before they had played a game here was extremely risky and could blow up in our faces.
These opinions were all had before the current outcomes had unfolded.
Just because so many if you were wrong doesn't mean this outcome was unpredictable and this is just hindsight being 20/20.

I can understand that we will need players going forward, but this would be terrible?
6 more years at 6.5 per year will take him to his age 37 season. That would be the opposite of what we want to do.

This is cheap, short, and young when compared to Huberdeau's deal. If taking on Parayko meant offloading that contract, it would be great.
Otherwise, no thank you.
