The NFL against the Steelers? Big time lol at this. If anything he's being sent there to ensure the Steelers win.

NFL is genius. People are going to tune in to this one in higher numbers just to see if the crew can manage to screw up another outcome. I would watch anyway but this definitely adds another level of interest with the inclusion of the Brad Allen clown show.

Ref's job is to know what's going on an track players and numbers. Refs didn't do their job.

or perhaps these assignments were made well in advance but not published so it's too late to logistically change.

How were the coaches and players at fault for the ref's incompetence?

There is still a question about whether Decker and/or Skipper reported, whether they did or not when Skipper was announced as eligible the Lions just ignored it and went in like nothing.
That isn’t in the refs it’s on the clueless Liin players and coaching staff.

The other problem is with so many incompetent crews it is likely that he replacement group isn’t any better and maybe worse.

It is on the refs, and the NFL is doubling down saying the Lions confused the refs. The rule is the player needs make a physical motion and verbally report. Decker did both, Skipper had his had raised but never talked to the ref. The ref leaves Sewell and Decker who are talking to him before Skipper got there.
The reason Campbell was so pissed at the the end of the game is because he drew out the exact play prior to the game when they met with the refs.

Flacco is also sitting. I'd be shocked if Hurts plays more than a half.
The assertion by the league that adding a 17th game and 7th team to the playoffs would create more meaningful end of season games is one of their more hilarious lies.

In the old 16 game season you still had a similar number of meaningless games in week 17. So in theory they went from 256 to 272 games with the same number of meaningless games. So you could argue that many games had meaning last week that likely don't if there was only 6 playoff teams and a 16 game season. No matter what the league tries there will always be meaningless end of season games.

I'd rather have a week 18 with only a few games that matter vs. a 4th pre-season week where the only thing that matters is who makes the final cut as the 3rd-string safety

My take after all this is that because Skipper was reporting all game, and was in the vicinity of the huddle as part of the others reporting, the ref made the false assumption upon the break of the huddle that it was Skipper again reporting and not laying attention to which big white lineman was actually talking to him. Could the Lions have made double sure the ref knew which one reported? Sure. Are they supposed too? No.

There's no doubt Allen got confused. We all know he got the players mixed up on that play. He's human and it's totally understandable that with everything going on at the time that he saw Decker report and didn't double check the number on his jersey and simply assumed it was Skipper again and the Lions got screwed. It's happened and can't be changed. The problem is him and the league doubling down and failing to admit the mistake that looks bad. How can you have faith in the system when there is no acceptance of mistakes made? It's essentially Trump levels of accountability.
