This will allow him to hopefully find another contract elsewhere in the league, betting on himself to have success in the right environment. Lets assume that he could earn another $20M over the remainder of his career elsewhere, leaving $47M on the table.
Why would someone walk away from $47M?? He has earned $44M to date in his career. Add another $7M (Flames) and $20M (others), and he has a total of $63M in career earnings. He has enough money to last himself and his family for generations. Why choose to be unhappy for 7 more years, for money that will likely make no difference in his life. Happiness and time are valuable.
Call me crazy, but I would make this choice 10/10 in his shoes.

Lol, this has as much chance of happening as Flames fans voluntarily chipping in $1,000 each to buy out his remaining contract.

I don’t know Alberta law now but most place you can’t just decide to send people home for mental issue on your own. You need consent. Anyway Huberdeau is not normal people. He has a valid contract.
|
You’re the one who brought up mental hospitals lol dummy. That’s why I’m laughing at you.
In any case the NHL has a players assistance program for guys with drug and or mental issues. Huberdeau could fall into this quite easily, given what a train wreck he’s been since his arrival.

I’ve always thought the only possible trade I could maybe see for Huby would be a trade with MTL for Josh Anderson. Both underperforming. There’s obviously a gap in contract $ and not sure MTL would ever entertain the idea of taking on Huby’s contract anyways but…player-wise I could see it working out for both sides.

I can tell you’re triggered and acting a bit Karen like, maybe time to log off for a bit.
Huberdeau isn’t in a right frame of mind and the on ice results speak for themselves. The flames should absolutely look at getting him off the books in any capacity, including mental health issues. He said he saw a sports psychologist (aka a shrink) last offseason to solve his issues. Clearly it didn’t work.
Im sorry you can’t handle real conversation and feel the need to lash out.

I shouldn't have to, but suggesting that the Flames get him off the books because of mental health issues because he saw a sports psychologist and he didn't score more because of it is so far beyond stupid that I can't believe you even brought it up. Is that better?

NHL players are not like employees in that sense. Their treatment is governed by the CBA. Including LTIR, player assistance, etc. Good luck with all that.
These are just silly fantasies. Huberdeau’s obviously fit to play. His fancy stats were among the best on the team last game. Not getting points isn’t grounds to LTIR a player.

You missed one important part, the SPC’s. it was through the contract that Jack Eichel signed with Buffalo that the team was able to deny him the right to a specific surgery he wanted and had they not worked out a trade it would have been within the Sabres rights to LTIR him indefinitely.
The flames could try to make the argument that he isn’t mentally fit for playing in the NHL and attempt to LTIR Huberdeau that way.

His contract cannot be bought out to save any material cap.

Not happening since the amount owed to Hubby is considerably more and for more years.

I'm not missing anything. The Flames would (a) look terrible if they tried; (b) easily lose the PA's grievance; (c) never attract another player to sign a contract at any stage; and (d) be the first team to be penalized by the NHL for abuse of LTIR.
You think any reputable psychologist is going to diagnose Huberdeau as "unfit to play" because he hasn't scored (while putting up very decent advanced stats numbers)? Come on.

A) Optics mean almost nothing in the NHL, there’s a list a mile long of horrible things happening with no repercussions. This wouldn’t even be a blip on the radar.
B) Maybe you have a link to back up your claim? Big words with nothing to show for it. Eichel either didn’t grieve the team having control over his health or he was unsuccessful. I was unaware the NHLPA was able to over rule medical professionals. Link?
C) See answer A, optics don’t mean a thing, money and winning do.
D) Why would the flames be the first team penalized for this? There have been more egregious examples in the past, see Marian Hossa.
Im saying a psychologist/psychiatrist could diagnose him with whatever they wanted, maybe he’s a little depressy spaghetti and needs 7.5 years of therapy a la Kylington.

Eichel didn’t dispute his LTIR status. He disputed the refusal of the Sabres to approve his desired operation, which had never been performed on an NHL player.
Now, show me a team which has put a player on LTIR for mental issues against their wishes. Show me a team that has even forced their player to attend counselling for mental issues.
