Wasn't it because of what Panarin was clearly going to demand on his next contract, though?

That was weird. Chicago extended Panarin past ELC to a 2x$6M and traded him to Columbus before it ever kicked in.

However they justified it, it was the wrong decision. They traded an elite player for a non-elite one, and any chance of further deep playoff runs was over.
It’s tough to ask for more than three titles and four conference championship appearances from any one core anyway, but that trade was the bullet to the brain of the Kane/Toews Blackhawks as a dominant force.

If I had to guess, they were forced to bridge Panarin because of what he wanted long term. But then they decided to trade for a guy making the same money long term and avoid the sticky position they’d be in in 2 years anyway with Panarin.

Oh, apparently they were mad they got swept by Nashville that year. I wasn’t really paying close attention to the league then.

So they Travis Hamonic’d themselves and traded for a contract instead of a a player.
(They did the same thing with Hjalmarsson for Murphy - proving yet again that scared money don’t make money)
They had Artemi Panarin. If they had to move an extra couple million here or there in two years, they should’ve done that. They should’ve figured it out.
But they didn’t, and now none of the people involved in that decision remain with the organization.
To whit… ‘lawl’.

But it also proves how rebuilding is not linear and not always linked to making the best move every time. How many Stanley Cup winnners have a laundry list of bad moves? All of them.
But ultimately there's a lot of luck and poor performance involved in Stanley Cups in the cap era. So if they make a good decision and keep Panarin, maybe they're slightly better than they are now and don't end up drafting a generational talent?

That is correct, they traded him prior to the time when they knew he would become an UFA and they could not afford him. They just made a poor trade.

It wasn’t an extra couple million, more like $5M plus.

They couldn’t have kept him. They had two 10.5M guys already plus Seabrook, Keith, and, as we’ve seen, Panarin wanted more. In 2019. So they could have kept him for 2 years and then lost him.

Kind of a poor trade all around because Columbus lost Panarin for nothing.

Yegor's run hasnt really been at 5v5 anyways TBH.
In the last 12 games he has 12 points but at 5v5 he has 3 points, his production has been on the PP and PK.
His 5v5 play has actually been not great in that time...he been on the ice for a team worst 11 goals against at 5v5 and only 4 goals for in those 12 games.
So hopefully this change helps that line because Mangiapane-Lindholm-Sharangovich have not been very good at 5v5

One thing though - Sharangovich has become much more comfortable at being the puck carrier. That should help.
I’m still on the “feed Huberdeau ice time and pp minutes” train, because I think (a) they have him on the team for years to come and (b) he won’t get better through benching and demotions, as much as some people want to see him punished. People say he has to figure it out. And then they say the team should make it harder for him to figure it out.

He's still getting plenty of ice time and 2nd PP time. He has every opportunity to show he deserves increased time.
He's not been the subject matter of benching and demotions.

Deserves isn’t the issue. How to improve is. And I’m not talking about what’s happened, I’m talking about what’s being proposed by certain posters.
In fact, he has been benched a few times within games. And I consider PP1 to PP2 a demotion since it’s usually about 1:30 vs 0:30 (his unit looked better though). And Backlund’s line is an offensive demotion. Kadri’s line gets the offensive zone starts, Backlund’s gets defensive zone starts and Lindholm’s gets a mix.

Huberdeau Lindholm Sharangovich
All 3 should have a lot to play for
If they can’t figure it out, they truly cannot be helped

Most of the forwards have been benched within games at certain times. That's how Huska rolls. The players have a chance to establish themselves in the first two periods, then he shortens the bench in the third and goes with the guys who are rolling that night. Huberdeau is lucky he was put with Coleman and Backlund for a while or he would have been benched more.
