i almost died

having ice cubes in your water is apparently not a very good idea (or maybe it's just me). one of the little s snuck through and lodged itself in my throat, and only after mercilessly beating my chest was it able to go all the way down. scared the living crap out of my co-workers as well as i made quite the unholy noise trying to get it down.

anyone else have some near death experiences to share?

A semi-truck going full speed missed my car by an inch.

some ###### on the QE2 near Stavely undertook us going at least 200km/h and had to sneak back into the fast lane by a semi. missed the truck by no more than an inch. if he hit the truck, we're all dead.

man was i pissed.

i have a tendency to step out on the road without looking both ways, and a couple of weeks ago it almost cost me my life. i saw a cab coming down the street, and as i walked across to catch it, a bareling van coming the other way barely missed me by inches.

I'm sure other people have come closer to death, but it truly was one of the most frightening moments in my life and i was sort of shell-shocked for several days thinking how close i had come to die because of one ######ed slip.

Ummm... Lets see...

Center St., 4th ave downtown. It was green light to go across Center on 4th... this Honda Civic (yes Asian) sped down Center, ran the red light, if my mom didn't brake in time, I woulda be toast since it was coming from Center street north and I was on the passenger side.

Sunridge Mall, going to the theaters... decided to use the pedestrian walkway instead of the lights... I stepped out, truck missed me by a couple inches at most, my friend pulled me back just in time. The Truck was turning out of the theater too... and it goes straight to the curb on a 2 lane road.

I have a bad tendency to not notice things when I cross the street. At this point, I have no idea how many times I've just about been hit by a car because I didn't realize I was crossing a street to begin with. I've certainly scared the living daylights out of a few friends though. So what scares me more is the stories a lot of my friends have about me just about getting myself killed and the fact I don't even realize to begin with.

Not me, but a good friend of mine, he actually died and they brought him
back to life. Not a near-death situation, he was dead.

Industrial accident.

When the paramedics got to him, he was dead. When they got him to
the hospital, he was dead. They still didn't give up on him...and thankfully
brought him back to life.

He's had some issues dealing with life, death, and the pursuit of happiness.

He will not talk about what he saw, heard, what-have-you, when he
died. He figures that's for him, reserved for him, and insists that no
one would understand. (He is not religious, so I have no idea what
all that means) He will cut off the conversation in anger if you
continue to push the topic.

1999 - Beaver Mines Lake. I was prussik climbing, and was suspended about 30 feet above the ground, when the carabiner on my harness snapped (sounded like a gun going off). It took the guys running the prussik climb a while to find a ladder long enough to reach me, during which time the foot in the harness went completely numb, and the numbness started working its way up my very taught leg, making it harder and harder to put weight on it. The only other thing holding me up was the grip of my bare hands on the rope. People on the ground afterwards said that by the end I holding on so tight that I was hanging almost upside down. In any case, once they did get a ladder to me, I was put in hospital overnight with my hands completely bandaged up (bad rope burn) and treated for shock.

Had I fallen, it likely would have been lights out.

I was about a foot or so away from being hit by a car walking on a marked crosswalk a few years back. The car on the right lane had already stopped for me to cross, but the car on the other lane just went through without even checking. Luckily for me, I've always been in the habit of not fully trusting drivers attentiveness and making sure I look at both lanes before proceeding. When crossing the road, you can never be too careful.

My parachute malfunctioned the one and only time I sky-dived. Only one steering rope dropped. Landed in a thick of trees and almost impaled myself on a barbed-wire fencepost.

Fun ride though. Had a lot of time to contemplate my life to that point.

Closest call I ever had was in high school. I was walking home and listening to my walkman pretty loudly. I was watching for the walk sign to come on at Mcleod and when it did, I just started walking. Some lady behind me grabbed my backpack and yanked me back just before a garbage truck went barrelling thru the red light. Inches.
I think she was more shaken up than I was, but a couple hours later, it sunk in and I was pretty freaked for a couple days after.

edit... And ten years later (just last year) I actually got hit by a garbage truck pretty much under the exact same circumstances. Luckily, it was just a dinky little mini garbage truck (they have mini garbage trucks in Rome for the narrow streets). He slammed the brakes and just bumped me enough to knock me over. I wonder if my ultimate demise will be caused by an ipod and a garbage truck.

Nah. 'Chute opened. Just couldn't steer very well to where I wanted to go (i.e. open field). Funny in retrospect. The 'chute was a "rental" so the drop zone operator was pretty p*ssed. Trees tore it up.

I've actually had worse happen to me, albeit in a medical vein. Since I was already under, I can't exactly recount them first-hand.

- I obviously dont remember this but my heart stopped both when I was born and the day after.
- Almost fell through the ice while walking near the shore of Wabowden Lake. I held onto a small rock cliff and yelled for my dad to come and help me.
- I was almost hit by a car while walking back to school. It was completely my fault and was pissed off at myself.
