His stats don't look pretty so he's probably one of those guys like Thompson or Fry they'll stick in Buffalo as depth. 36 years old too.

Yes, it's clearly a depth signing/spring training invite. Nothing more.

Jays resign Kiermeier on a 1 year deal.

I am fine with that. He wasn't the problem last year and having a vet that can produce at the plate and solid defense, not much to complain about. The musical chairs in the AL East (he wanted to play on grass) meant he was forced to come back here in the end, but again that's fine

What a bad choice the outfield was the one area where they could improve the line-up. Joy... they basically have no choice but to roll back the Snooze Jay line-up they had last year (barring some kind of trade for a 3B). What a waste of an offseason if they don't.

On one hand KK isn't good enough to be on a championship roster based on his bat, so just based on this move the Jays to me are admitting that. Dollar and term are great, so no complaint there. In a weird way, taking into account they need to sell tickets for the reno, while also not getting into bad long term contracts, I don't mind these types of moves. They're not screwing themselves over in the long term and that's the key - those moves terrify me, and they're not doing that. I don't think anyone fully knows their full play here, but that signing was something I didn't see coming at all.

Ya nothing gets the fans going like DRS stats.

Disappointing offseason so far!

I don't see any downside here. He played well, good in the room, and the same criteria you used to sign him last year applies this year, to fill a variety of on and off field roles,...you'd be looking for a similar vet this offseason to replace him as that vet anyways.

I don't think this shuts the door on any outfield changes and brings some stability and continuity.

I don't see how it doesn't... You're not paying him 10M to be a 4th outfielder and I doubt that they're trading Varsho or Springer.

So basically we're running back the same outfield except that Kiermaier and Springer will be another year post-peak older. The Blue Jays just signaled that the plan is to be marginally worse this upcoming season (again barring a really big trade) except by swing of random fortune.

The Jays tried to land a difference maker and he chose to go elsewhere.

The rest of what's left at the top of the FA pool want way more money than they are worth it seems.

Starting to look like this team is going to have to improve from within.

Let's not forget that the Jays won 89 games last season despite huge underperformances from Vladdy, Manoah and Kirk. Springer and Varsho left a lot on the table with the bats too.

But hey, still lots of off season left to improve the roster. I'm still baffled as to what they will do for 3B though.

This puts more pressure on Varsho to perform if he’s going to still be predominantly in LF. It’s not like he needs to be great there with the bat, but a return to 2022 numbers would be welcome. Hopefully he’s working on his bat speed some this offseason.

Personally, I’m not into paying Bellinger, so I think this could make sense and he fits in the clubhouse well.

Bring in more punch to the lineup via DH, see if you can make a trade for a 3B, and it’s still feasible the roster is improved.

I’m not disagreeing with what you wrote, though I also think the other side of the coin in last years success was our usual killers in the Yanks and Sox were bad, as well as our pitching being a best case scenario. This year both those teams and our pitching will likely regress to norms and that doesn’t bode that well. Will the batting bounce back? I don’t know.

I’m glad they didn’t overpay for anyone yet. If Bellinger wants more than four years cool. Just not for us. Certainly KK leaves a lot to be desired for an outfield bat, but it beats getting into a terrible contract for a long time. Clearly the bar isn’t high with holes needing to be filled, but this currently isn’t a championship roster and I’m okay with that as it’s the next best thing to do with the best being a retool. Long term deals through this years FA are the worst thing possible. Glad they haven’t gone there (yet).
