Hypothetical. Would you guys do this or is giving them Markstrom absolutely forbidden:
To EDM
Markstrom (CGY retains 1M)
To CGY
Campbell
Broberg
2 x 1st round picks
1 x 2nd round pick
|
That's not enough to take Campbell from the oil.

That is a terrible trade. Campbell alone would cost 3 first round picks to offload that contract. Broberg has no value. The trade implies Markstrom has negative value.

I would do this if those two firsts are protected in such a way that they are unprotected when Draisaitl and McDavid skip town

I guess high end is too subjective.
In this case I meant 1st and 2nds.
The only high 1st round picks the Flames are likely to have at this point will be their own 1st round picks.

Would there be any additional value in combining Hanifin and Lindholm in a trade with both at 50% retention? You’d have to find the right partner that could use both. Dallas comes to mind. With both of them included, I think you can put some A-level prospects in the mix.
For example…
To Dallas:
Hanifin (50% retained for the rest of the year) and extended.
Lindholm (50% retained)
2024 3rd round pick
To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick (lottery protected)
2024 2nd round pick
2025 1st round pick (lottery protected)
Stankoven
Bourque
Dadanov (salary dump)
Who says no? It’s an all-in move for Dallas. I might be slightly favouring the flames in this trade but I included an extension on Hanifin to even it out a bit.

I think the Flames would be willing to take this deal as it lands 2 top prospects that are closer to making an impact in the NHL that would fit the new rink rebuild timeline. They get one 1st where they hope to get 2 but the level of prospect balances it out.
For Dallas I am not sure they dump 2 top prospects but if they can keep both it would be a solid move to solidify their contender status in the west. I could see both Lindholm and Hanifin taking less due to the tax advantage and the ability to be on a contender.
Ultimately I think that is a really solid and interesting trade proposal. It would be funny if Lindholm and Hanifin were traded together again.

Ok. What’s the step too far in Calgary’s favour? Bourque and the 2nd round pick:
To Dallas:
Hanifin (50% retained for rest of the year and extension in place)
Lindholm (50% retained)
2024 3rd round pick
To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick (lottery protected)
2025 1st round pick (lottery protected)
Stankoven
Dadonov (salary dump)
At this point, I feel like the flames are not really getting much extra. They would get a 1st + prospect for each of Hanifin and Lindholm by trading them separately even without an extension in place for Hanifin. I guess that might be the cost to get an A-level prospect in Stankoven.

You're not getting Stankoven in this deal. It's not happening. He's not on the table for rentals.
Edit- Hell, you're not getting a team's back to back first round picks either. Team's just don't mortgage the future like this anymore. You can't if your goal is to compete. You need players on ELCs stepping up to contribute on a regular basis.

With two consecutive years of protected 1st's, what happens to those picks in the event they are lottery picks? Even if they are most likely not lottery picks, it would have to be part of the deal.

It would likely have to be something like, if the 2024 first round pick is deferred to 2025, the 2025 first round pick is deferred to 2026. No protection at that point on the 2025 pick but there would still be protection on the 2026 pick. If 2026 pick is a lottery pick, it becomes a 2027 first round pick.

You’re probably right. I am including an extension for Hanifin though so, in this proposal, only Lindholm is a possible rental. I have not seen many consecutive first round pick trades in the past but it could happen. Many teams have gone multiple years without first round picks by making separate trades though… this is a single trade for a 1a/1b center and a top 2/3 defenceman.
I have no idea if you’re right about Stankoven. It might be impossible to get him. I’m trying to come up with a scenario where the flames could get an A-level prospect from trading these pieces. Combining them seems like a way to potentially do it. The picks could possibly be altered to make it look better for Dallas. Also, what if Lindholm was extended (although, my understanding is that he wants to test free agency):
To Dallas:
Hanifin (50% retained for the rest of the year and extended)
Lindholm (50% retained for the rest of the year and extended)
2025 3rd round pick
To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick (lottery protected)
2025 2nd round pick (becomes a first round pick if Dallas makes it past the 1st round)
Stankoven
Dadonov (salary dump)

Well, it is pretty idiotic to speak on what a GM would or wouldn't do when you possibly cannot know. History shows GM's sometimes do mind boggling things at trade deadlines.
