Sometimes Wayne Gretzky just gets it wrong. When the Edmonton Oilers announced Paul Coffey as an assistant coach over a month ago, eyebrows were raised, and skepticism lingered in the air.

However, for Coffey, the skepticism and doubt didn't faze him as he said:
“I talk to Wayne Gretzky every other day even prior to this. He was a little bit worried when I took this job. He said, ‘You’re setting yourself up to fail.’ It didn’t bother me. I didn’t really care about that.'"

Its almost hilarious to look at how screwed the Oilers are.
1) They have a poor prospect base, they don't have much that can step in with a cheap entry level contract that can make any kind of difference. After years of poor drafting with high picks and even worse in discovering talent with later draft picks the Oilers are at the point where they have no real strong future, and the prospects that they have won't get them a really strong return that they need.
2) They've positioned their window for this year and next for winning a cup, next year Draisaitl goes into the free agent frenzy period where the Oilers have to decide to keep him and risk losing him for nothing, or pushing hard for a new contract. And even as flawed as Draisaitl is, if they trade him for picks and prospects it might create a desire for McDavid to move on. But can you afford to resign Draisaitl who will command top dollars in this league? Think like $11 mill or more.
3) The Oilers are in cap hell, they can't get rid of their bad contracts like Campbell. They have literally no cap space for improving their lineup this year, and next year its still 14 players signed with $13 million in cap space. While the players they're shedding at the end of the year are pretty much crap. It means that they might merely reshuffle deck chairs on the titanic.
4) Their team is poorly constructed, and after a nice coach bump, they're back to playing the game their way and not the coaches way. Do they have an entitled locker room run by Draisaitl and McDavid? It looks like it.
5) You can roll out all the fancy stats that you want with me. But Captain they generate all these chances, and shots and blah blah blah. But the eye test is the ultimate judge, and on most nights, this team plays like they really don't care about their end. And that's how they're built.
6) Their top prospects, Holloway, Broberg, Boingualt the next big hope for them are non existant.
7) You have a dead ball GM in Holland who's retiring, and he's apt to do a panic move and leave a smoldering wreck behind.
In the words of Clubber Lang, you can't help but look at the Oilers, their draft strategy, their free agent strategy, their management strategy, their cap situation and the results on the ice and mutter "Dead Meat".

$11.0 m? No chance. Draisaitl wants Nate MacKinnon's contract, and won't accept less.

I don't even think MacKinnon's contract is enough for him to re-sign. MacKinnon's AAV is, what, 12.5m or so? I don't see it. Oilers would be wise to trade him in the summer.

Agreed. The cost to keep Draisaitl and McDavid will likely be $30 million AAV combined.

But then Draisaitl would only be getting $10M.

I feel sorry for any team that signs either of those two players for that amount.
Sorry, I won’t feel sorry for the oilers if they do.

Draisaitl will be a Dallas star. They will use Benn's cap space to fit him in.

Oh, I agree.
But of course, what is going to happen, is that Draisaitl—out of his great magnanimity—is going to re-sign in the $13 m range, and it will be lauded by Oilers fans for being such a "team friendly" deal to keep the twins together, and Draisaitl, for his commitment to winning in Edmonton at any cost.

Edmonton will get close to half an hour less sunlight today than Calgary; ergo, E=NG.

It would take balls of steel to trade Draistatl instead of pushing to resign him.
