Not sure what to make of Seamus, but it's hard not to like him. He's at 23 points in 18 NCAA games as a defenseman in his D+2 year, extremely impressive. His only weakness, and it's a big one, is that he's 5'9".
I'm not going to sway anyone on this kid, but I've always loved RW Chase Stillman- all the way back to the 2021 U-18s. I was praying we would get him at #45 in the Draft that year, but the Devils took him in the first round. He's the type of player you win with, although he'll never be a huge scorer. He can play in all situations, has a never-ending motor, and is gritty as hell. Only 7 points in his first 20 AHL games so far, but he has the skills, IQ, and shot to put up better numbers in the future.

Part of my reason for going for Casey is the Devils have a lot of offensive dmen with Dougie, Nemec and Hughes. So I think Casey may be obtainable
Not without risk due to size for sure but the upside is enticing

College players scare me. Imagine the Flames trade foe him, then he refuses to come here and becomes a UFA.

Listening to Flames talk this week, Steinberg made a really good case for trading Lindholm to the Avs.
They still have all of their first rounds picks going forward, plus some really good prospects to round out the deal. They now have the cap space for him, plus it would be a perfect fit for them.

It really is. Only thing to me is they’re going to be really good for a long period of time. It would be nice to get a higher up pick but the option to flip it or more picks to offset the late firsts probably helps a bit. I just can’t see Sakic being pressured to do anything from their ownership. They seem to be a patient organization who puts their trust in him. So will he give up a lot, I’m skeptical.

If they are going to be good for a long period maybe Lindholm feels the desire to sign there, making the trade more worthwhile for the Avs. I haven't done a cap check to see if they can afford him in the future.

Girard would have been the perfect cap dump coming back to the Flames for either Lindholm or Kadri.
Of course with his personal issues now that's unlikely but he actually would have had a much bigger role on this team in terms of being the PP QB and puck mover (roles that were taken by Makar and Byram in Colorado).
I think he could have bounced back to the promise he had shown in his younger days with those roles again on a different team.

13. The Avalanche expect a serious run at a second Stanley Cup in three seasons, and are trying to set a tone. The concern is depth. Rantanen (22:37), MacKinnon (also 22:37) and Valeri Nichushkin (21:17) are tied for first and seventh in ice-time per game among forwards. Only one other team (Toronto) has three in the top 20, and William Nylander is 20th. Trading Tomas Tatar to Seattle (a need for the Kraken) opened up some space, and everyone’s wondering what Colorado will do with it. One target is believed to be Calgary’s Elias Lindholm. He’s exactly what they need, but that might take time. The Avalanche still face a cap crunch, although no one believes they will stand pat.

If the Avs trade for Lindholm it will almost certainly be as a rental. They still have to fit in Landeskog’s cap when he comes back.

50 percent retained at the deadl8ne plus a potential acquisition of RyJo to grease their wheels should bring in a good haul regardless if Lindys a rental or not.

I just don't see them trading RyJo after just acquiring him and at the rate he is scoring goals.

Also they're pushing for a Stanley Cup.
Mackinnon - Lindholm - Johansen down the middle? Yeah, I could see that winning a Cup.
The Avs don't have to dump Johansen to acquire Lindholm assuming the timing works (closer to the deadline).

And this is why just looking at stats is useless.
Go read the opinion of Avalanche fans on Johansen. They hate the guy. They hate his compete level. They hate that he's totally reliant on the PP to produce points. They hate is aloof approach to the game.
He's currently the 2c on the third highest scoring team in the league and is on pace for just 30 points.
They need an upgrade.

What am I missing? How would getting closer to the deadline help a team that's already using LTIR, and not banking cap-space?
Also, how would they fit Lekhonen when he gets back if they get Lindholm without sending salary back? Lekhonen was week to week with a neck injury in NOV, I don't know when he's getting back, but I doubt he would miss the rest of the season. That would leave them about $1.1M of LTIR.
The only wild card in all this is Girard. He's currently in the player assistance program, but I don't know if COL can put him on LTIR.

Avs trading for Lindholm and Monahan while dumping some cap would be an interesting play.
