Really impressed with Greer's game. He obviously doesn't come with much skill, but I tried focusing in on him over his last number of games and he was doing the right things every time he was on the ice, whether it was his constant motor and hustle, using his stick smartly on the opposing player or taking smart lanes all over the ice both while attacking and defending. Maybe it's just me, but I think his hockey IQ is extremely high. It's just too bad he clearly doesn't have the puck/shooting skills, but no complaints from me. He's an example of a player who does what he needs to, to stay in the league and has positive impacts every time he's on the ice.

Looking back on my first impression of this claim. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Hard not to be happy with Conroy's (or whoever he leans on) pro talent identification so far. Sharangovich and Greer have been solid choices so far.

I love this guy. He brings a checking line jam to the offensive zone that makes them more of an offensive threat than a 4th line should be. He also brings energy and hustle. He's been an excellent waiver pickup.

Greer has been a great addition. He works hard all the time, sticks up for his teammates, and he even surprises with some high-skill plays. Great claim.

In interviews he sounds like a coach already.

I actually think he has a decent shot when given the puck in position.

Now I know why B's fans weren't very happy when he was put on waivers. Dude has been one of the better waiver pickups for the Flames in a very long time.

Regarding the high IQ part, that is the type of player you want on your fourth line. When you are out on the penalty kill or are being overwhelmed by a dominating team, you need a smart body that can make sound hockey plays to relieve the pressure, or in AJ's case apply pressure in transition or on the attack.

Even if the hands and feet aren't elite level, good hockey sense can still get you a full career in the big leagues. Coaches love that type of utility player. I thought I saw in Duehr last year but this year is proving me wrong unfortunately.

He is the best waiver pickup for the Flames since Huselius in 2005.

PS: If I'm forgetting someone let me know.

Huselius wasn't a waiver claim. He had cleared waivers shortly before the Flames traded Montador for him.

Schlemko was a pretty good waiver claim.

Huselius was acquired in a trade (he had cleared waivers prior to the trade).

The last waiver claim who did anything for the Flames was Schlemko in 2015. Prior to that, Joey MacDonald was a decent pickup in 2013 and Blake Comeau in 2011.

Comeau had 5 goals and 10 assists in 58 games that season. Greer is currently at 5 goals and 4 assists in 30 games.

Right, I completely misremembered it. I was sure it was waivers, but you're right of course.

There will be people who don't want to hear it but they should move Greer at the trade deadline for a pick.

One lesson I hope Greer has shown the Flames is that you don't need to trade mid-late round picks to acquire bottom line talent, when there are very capable players available every year for free via free agency or waivers.

Hard not to agree with this.

I'd say Scorangovich has been better than expected and Greer? He's a solid Professional Journeyman.

His effort really cant be questioned, he plays with grit, energy and determination and brings it every night and even chips in with offence from time to time.

When I bitch about Flames performances those are two guys whose names never even occur to me. They're doing their jobs and doing them well.

I can see why Boston fans were loathe to lose Greer. He's a good Pro.

I like AJ Greer.

True, but we always concentrate on the success stories: Tolvanen was claimed last year by SEA. Valimaki, and Ingram by ARI.

There are still a lot more misses than hits with the waivers wire: Greer, Reilly, Fagemo, Foudy, Denisenko, Lassi, Prosvetov, Ludvig, and Johnston were claimed off waivers this year. I don't see that much value in the group outside of Greer and Prosvetov.

You just listed like 7 useful players who were all available for free, and did not require wasting draft picks to acquire.

That doesn't include the long list of UFAs also available near the start of the season that can also be acquired for a minimum deal to play bottom line minutes.

Emberson was solid for SJ too before his injury.

happy to eat crow when it comes to Greer. He's been really solid.

Greer was a waiver claim, if anyone will give you a draft pick for him at the TDL, you take it and run. Found money

Schlemko of course has the great shootout record, but overall he was pretty low impact. I actually preferred Diaz that year.
