Default MacKenzie Weegar's Difficult Route to the NHL

Good write up by Julian Mckenize about Weegar's road to the NHL. It's a great story.

“It was a different route. It was a tough route,” Weegar said. “But you know what, the more I talk about that route and how different and difficult it was, at the same time, it was the right route.

Weegar was the main piece in the Tkachuk trade--and what a piece we got! I'm happy we have him signed long term.

I remember a story last year where Weegar said he almost quit professional hockey when he was in the ECHL and was ready to go home to look for a regular job. Such a thin line between being a millionaire professional athlete and just a regular person in the workforce. It makes you wonder how many people quit just before they would have made it, or on the other hand, how many fledgling players hold on too long and miss out on other career opportunities.

Suspect there's a lot more who hang on too long. I have family who played in the OHL and theres a bunch of his teammates who are still playing in lower level leagues in Europe like 10 years later.

It depends a lot on your situation though, particularly with hockey being an expensive sport. Some of these guys can putter around making nothing for 10 years and end up with some decent job at their family's company while others can't just waste months of reasonable earning potential

Also this video is wild in retrospect

Huberdeau takes down the ref to start a fight with Weegar (And then gets tuned up) while the ref is crawling off the ice injured.

Weegar got passed over as an Assistant Captain for the Flames this year. I'm hoping that he does get the "A" next season going forward.

I've got a ton of respect for Weegar. This guy knows it's a game , knows he's fortunate enough to have a humility about him that he's just an everyday guy.

Every interview I've seen , every Interaction he has with the media he's extremely well spoken, genuine, likeable and he needs to be the Captain of this team when Backs is gone

Level headed , smart and respectful.
