$6 million per for 6 years would have been insane. I thought after last season, Dube was primed to take a big step forward, but not that big. I could have understood if they did a 6 year, $4-4.5 million AAV deal, although in hindsight that would have been bad by the looks of it. I get the logic though, and sometimes taking that kind of gamble pays off.
The point of these types of contracts is that the first couple of years might be an overpay, but the second half is a bargain. That would mean Steinberg thought Dube would be considerably better than a $6 million player one day. I don't think he has even shown that he has that kind of promise.

I know Dube is one of the top players who act as ambassadors for the city , taking new players and showing them around, helping them get situated. He's likely earned some leeway as his community impact is pretty significant but I also can't help but wonder if all that good will is used up as he still needs to be a contributor on the ice. And he has sadly flatlined.
As for Mangiapane, I believe Sec214 said in his last little insider bit that Mang may be looking for a change of scenery.
Which I'm okay with. He was an excellent player when tree was dangl8ng the contract carrot in front of him and has done nada since he signed his big deal.
And if the Flames wanted to find roster spots in which they could improve, Dube and Mangiapane are right there with Ruzicka as players who could be replaced.

Duclair is a healthy scratch for the Sharks. I bet the Flames could get him for next to nothing at this point. Worth a shot to fix the Huberdeau situation?

Duclair has been up and down his whole career, injuries of course playing a big part.
I'd take him, but not if the opportunity cost meant missing out on a better acquisition later down the line. Also not at his current $3 million cap hit.

You know this is his last season on that deal right? Pro rated he's like $1.5mil on an expiring contract.

Or that Steinberg sucks at math, which is something he himself readily admits.

I don’t understand the Duclair push. Nothing of what I’ve seen on the ice from Huberdeau says ‘oh he’s got the wrong trigger man’
Huberdeau needs to play better on a consistent basis before we sink more money into him.

I realize that, but it's all relative. Duclair is a former mid-level offensive player, who is a shell of the player he used to be. Anything but taking him at a minimum cap hit wouldn't be worth it. Especially if we also had to give up an asset to get him.
I get it, he had a great season playing with Huberdeau, but we don't know if that was a fluke or a lightning in a bottle kind of thing. Personally, I think Bennett was the more consequential player on that line and Duclair could have been replaced with any other 2nd line caliber winger. It wouldn't be worth wasting the little cap flexibility we got after trading Zadorov if Duclair came in and did nothing.

At least then we will have an answer to "what gets huberdeau going?" or we cross one more thing off the list

And it's Duclair. He's an OK player, but has had many injuries and as a result, inconsistent production. Nothing against him and I am sure he could be a useful depth player for us, but to expect him to turn around Huberdeau? We have players that can do what Duclair does as well or better, and it hasn't mattered.

The Flames need to get away from paying the 5 thru 8 forwards premium salaries until they can flush out the Huberdeau and Kadri contracts. Time to move on from Mangiapane and Dube after these contracts.

Both of those tweets are positive for Flames fans, imo. Sounds like there's action around our pending UFA's and that Tanev's value is high.

The minute Tatar was traded I felt like Lindholm was the guy they’re targeting. They will likely move Girard and/or Johansen to make room for his extension too.

It’s obvious we do not have players to turn Huberdeau around so far
I agreed no sense to invest on Duclair unless it’s a free option to try. He is a UFA, we can get him in the summer , it’s not like the Flames need to win now. They are selling.

Agreed. People saying we have players that do what duclair does or better. Except duclair has established chemistry with huby, which he doesn’t with our group. So bring a guy like him in and see if you can jump start him. You see it with some players, they have teammates they mesh with. Ideally, huby would have come in and made players around him better. But it is apparent he’s not that player, needs to play with the right kind of player to put up points.

Johansen would be fine to take back if it saves a retention spot

Why would they move Johansson? He has 10 goals and they don't need to move him to make it work if the Flames retain.
