That should tell you all you need to know about how long that was in the works for.

Do I think with one foot out the door he was more reckless with his moves as Flames GM? No as he was always pretty reckless with his decision making. Buying out Brouwer and immediately going back to the well for Neal. Giving up a 2nd, 3rd and 7th round pick for Calle ####ing Jarnkrok. So many reckless moves using draft picks as trade currency for depth players. For one of the younger GM's he's very old school with his love of thugs, depth forwards, and big defensemen and really never aligned with today's trend of building out through the draft as he was all about quick fixes and selling draft picks for depth. I wanted him fired years before he left because it was clear to me his vision for team building isn't going to get it done in today's NHL. He's going to leave a crater sized mess in Toronto when he's done there as well.
Calle Jarnkrok after escaping Darryl Sutter burying him had 20 goals and 19 assists last year and has 7 and 9 so far this year.

The trade looked bad because he didn't produce, but Darryl Sutter did him no favours making him a C when he was clearly a winger. It also seemed like he had it out for him from the get go with his comments after the trade was made.

You simply cannot turn down a 1st for Coleman at this point, there's really no need to keep him around if the value he's garnering attention wise is there. Yep would be great to keep him but longevity of the team > veteran 3rd line winger.

LOL. Those are their only assets so unless they think Conroy will accept food stamps, they won't be making any additions to their roster.

That is actually very Treliving-like, talk and talk and talk, being really cheap on prices, until you miss out on deals. Then, in a panic, overpay for the bridesmaid.

If the goal is to rebuild I would be happy with a 2nd or even a 3rd. It frees up cap space, and a roster spot in the top 9, so one of Ruzicka/Pelletier/Duehr/Coronato/Honzek/Klapka doesn't have to develop on the 4th line.

it's part of why I'm not particular interested in the Leafs as a trade partner. They don't have a lot of assets (pretty meh prospect base, no 2nd in the next 3 years), and with the few valuable ones they do have, you always read "no, not that one" lol. Then you factor in their cap situation and the fact that any deal with them would therefore have to be pretty complicated ... unless Treliving panics and overpays, I think there are way more interesting trade partners out there.

Yeah, I never answered this but Markstrom is easily a $3M goalie (in fact he's worth more to most teams).

$3M would put him below the pay level of Korpisalo, Gustaffson, Mrazek, Vanacek, Georgiev, Husso, and well into the bottom half of starters' pay. I suspect his fancy goalie stats are as good as those guys.

Just Sec's post last night suggesting there is interest around the league

"Blake Coleman is getting a lot of interest. Teams are interested but so far want a discount… Flames aren’t willing to let him go. He’s been a great leader and role model for the young guys on this roster. Blake’s camp is very happy here."

At what salary do you think he'd have zero value (neither positive nor negative value)?

Sec214 mentioned that teams have inquired about him, but both the Flames and the Coleman camp want to stay put at this point. I don't think there has been anything else

Not a chance. He has huge value as a leader to the young guys that are coming in.

One of the worst mistakes you can have as a rebuilding team, is not have enough good leadership around. Without guys to show the kids how to be pros, the kids end up running the asylum.

Also, not every trade has to happen this year. They are moving guys and getting picks this year - great. Coleman is a guy for whom the timeline is better to trade him in a couple years. We will need/want picks then too.

And above the pay level of Nedeljkovic, Lindgren, Lyon, Talbot, Varlamov, Quick, Ingram, Prosvetov, Woll, Thompson, Stolarz, DeSmith, Reimer, Montembault, who all have played 6+ games and have 15 points of SV% on Markstrom.

Rhetorical question. And irrelevant.

You don't like Markstrom and that is fine. But your view is at the extreme, and his value is way higher than you give him credit for. He is a good goalie who can play 50-60 games, and lots of teams still need one.

At $3M for a couple more years, he is very valuable.

It matters what team you play on.

save percentage is party a team stat IMO

Flames were a tire fire early, I thing most goalies would have been lit up

also 6+ seems cherry picked, lots of room for sheltered backups

How much value does he have, though? His stats last year were poor. His stats this year are about the same. Maybe a team with struggling goaltending takes a chance, but are they giving up a heck of a lot for that chance? He's definitely trending down.

It's about 1/4 of the season. But you're right about save percentage being partly a team stat. Is there a better one we should use?

It's pretty relevant when you claim he's "very valuable" at $3M. Try to answer it?

What's irrelevant is whether or not I like Markstrom. I like him because he's a Flame. I think he has negative value.
