Yeah, pain management after 50 is a full time job. Something always hurts.

Dang that sucks. I'm only a few years older than you and I'm all clickety clackety as well. It sucks realizing that you're getting older and no longer as invincible as you used to be.

I've basically had to reinforce my body in a few ways to allow the body to recover. I'll wear ankle, knee, and wrist tensors on occasion when I get minor tweaks or eve to just prevent tweaks when activities with higher risk arise. I'll wear weight lifting belts to allow for distribution of strain from lower back to abs so that I won't constantly hurt my lower back.

Regular physio and chiro now for other ailments. Foam rollers, hard rollers, hand rollers, shakti mats to address tweaks. Massage chair with heat, hot baths and cold showers are other strategies. I'm probably going to drop a few grand on replacing my bed soon to an adjustable frame mattress so I'm not in pain sleeping on a ####ty memory foam mattress and bed frame that I suspect has collapsed and the poorly built frame has cracked and doesn't offer good support. I'm also keeping tabs on exo-skeletons, hoping for a good quality one and good price to increase opportunities for recovery and also amplify certain activities without injury.

I'm in a of pain myself right now, but I try to limit my use of painkillers. I've been in a #### ton of pain since Saturday... Carried both my 3 and 5 year old on shoulders and arms 1 at a time or simultaneously for for several hours walking, dancing, jumping up and down etc. so they could have fun, see things and not get trampled at the holiday train event. I forgot to bring my weight lifting belt which probably would have made a huge difference. But I don't think it would have helped my ankles and knees even though I didn't fall and wore boots with good ankle support (too much ice at the event). I hear clicking sounds when I turn my head to look around... not fun.

Honestly though, another thing I need to do is improve my strength. I want to still be lifting my kids and throwing them around, rough housing etc. when they're 40 and 70 pounds maybe more (definitely not simultaneously though when they get to those weight ranges). Currently, they're 25 and 35 pounds. As much as I am in pain right now from Saturday, I don't regret it and I want to keep doing those types of things longer for as long as the kids will let me.

I'm 34 and don't experience much daily pain or issues. I didn't play any sports, have only worked desk jobs, and haven't had any significant injuries though, so that makes a huge difference. I only started regularly exercising for the first time in January this year and am in the best shape of my life now.

I give you six more years...40 is the real marker of pain.

Ha ha ha. 34 years old? Right up to 45 years old I still felt like a 20 year old as I had all my hair still jet black, worked out the same as I did for 20 years and felt like a well oiled machine. I thought the whole aging thing was overrated and then almost like a switch turned off at 46 everything fell apart. I went from black hair to salt and pepper hair overnight, got prostate issues, started getting tendonitis from lifting weights. Now in my early 50's I can't play a few hours of tennis without significant shoulder and arm pain as just this year alone I've had ruptured calf and forearm tendons which are firsts for me. None of this stuff ever happened in my first 46 years and now I have to do a lot more stretching and preventative stuff that I got away without doing for most of my life.

30s as well. Only chronic-ish pain/discomfort is in the neck.

Too bad the world isn't getting any less tech-dependent to help with that. I wake up pain free but it accumulates over the day and sucks by the end of the day. I play it off as 'big brain issues' to make light of the situation when people see me wincing. Might have to seek out Chiro for the first time in my life for that.

Everything else is near optimum though. I think I'm still as fast and agile as ever. I'd imagine it helps to have had no bone breaks and only a small amount or contact sports played as well as staying regularly active.

one thing I take 100% serious is desk work ergonomics. Desk work will #### up your body worse than any physical work ever would.

Ditto...except younger.

Man...years of youth sports, they catch up to you. And it gets worse and worse the higher levels you play.

Its a big reason I decided to volunteer as a soccer coach.

My coaches would throw me onto the field regardless of my health and I vowed not to be a coach like that.

I would agree that 40+ hour sitting jobs #### your body up worse than active ones (as long as you're doing things safely and not causing unnecessary strain).

Those adjustable raising/lowering desks are a must. That way you can alternate between sitting and standing over the day.

I'm 52 and I don't really have any issues. Probably not as flexible as I was when I was younger, and when I do get hurt it takes longer to heal. Also only had desk jobs, but try to stay active (I think I'm in better shape than when I was young and weigh less than I did in university). The sports/activities I am involved in have evolved over time towards non-contact sports and other activities where I can focus on fitness without a high risk of injury.

Then how come the moment someone gets off the tools and onto the desk they always blow up 20 pounds in a year? Humans are meant to be active, not sitting around all day.

Sure the potential of acute injuries is 1000% greater in labour jobs ( hence my bummed foot for life), but the chronic wasting that happens when your a desk jockey will #### you up top to bottom. Soft is the right word.

I'm lucky, I do desk work for my 9-5. but every morning, evening, and weekend I have endless manual labour at the farm. It's not even close which one makes me feel like #### at the end of the day. Given that I use Propper PPE at both jobs ( hearing is a huge exception for example).

You hit an age when doctors don’t even diagnose joint and muscle pain.

Me: “I’ve had this nagging pain in my knee for 10 months.”

Doctor: “Did you injure it doing something?”

Me: “Not really. Unless you mean just riding my bike and walking around and stuff.”

Doctor: [shrug] “You’re old. It’ll probably go away. Or not.”

Ha well my jet black hair has slowly been abandoning me in the last decade (to grey, at least there's still lots of it...), so aging gets a win on me there.

I know I'm still young-ish, I think my point was more that everyone has different lived experiences. There's guys in there 30's that feel like crap, and there's guys in their 50's or older who feel pretty great.

Yeah, there's almost no reason to bring some things up. I had a weird pain on the bottom of my foot a couple of weeks ago, started on a Thursday and then by Saturday night I was totally limping around. Trying to only walk on my toes on the one side, my heel felt like a hammer had hit it. Then Sunday it started to recede and by Monday it's like it never happened. Do I go to the doctor about something like that? "Age related" I'm sure.

Jeez kinda nice to see I'm not alone with all the aches and pains that come with aging. I'm 41 and for me soon as I hit 40 it was like my internal clock told my body its over. Though I've had my share of sports injuries (torn ACL surgically repaired, torn labrum, broken wrist, busted finger, and lots of general knocks and hits).

I've worked desk jobs for the last 20 years, but because of that have tried to make sure I exercise in some way and now that I'm working from home 100% I have a sit/stand desk that really is a game changer. And then I make sure to workout on my lunch break.

The big thing for me thats different is the actual workout. I used to lift heavy weights and go to fail, no stretching all lifting.

Now its essentially all about stretching and any weights its more about the reps than the actual weight.

I also think drinking lots of water, eating better, getting a good sleep, and all that has a bigger impact on me now than when I was a young invincible punk.

At age 38, aside from occasional tightness from sitting at a desk all day even with a nice ergonomic chair, no pain. I did have a back injury that took seriously half a year to resolve itself, but now I'm back to normal. I'm lucky as my dad has had plenty of back problems.
