Last year Arizona retained $2.625M cap-hit (same as Vrana) on P. Kane for a 3rd round pick.
Minnesota retained $1.875M on ROR for a 4th round pick.
Minnesota retained $1.275M on Orlov, and got a 5th round pick.
Is a 3rd round pick extremely valuable? I think that's debatable. A trade around Dube for Vrana would only use up 400k of cap space for example. Also STL might consider retaining some of his caphit if he passes through waivers.

Sure, but some people were talking about claiming him on waivers, which uses up the full $2.65. I think that's a clear non-starter.

Except they don't. Since the Zadorov trade, they have more cap flexibility than the majority of teams. Why should they waste their ammunition on a reclamation project?

He said he was in on a waiver claim, then changed his mind based on the cap situation.
If you don't find a team this bad up against the gap to be horrifying, you got problems.

I'm still down with the waiver claim either way, all I meant was we know Conroy is being picky with cap space for returning contracts in big trades

I’d be tempted to trade Dube for a bag of pucks the way he has played this season, so any bonafide 3rd line NHLer would be a massive upgrade.
