Just don’t make it a joke. Make it something players actually want to win, be the best at and hold records in. All starts with fastest skater, accuracy and hardest shot. Always have the reigning winner come back the following year to defend his record. Then just don’t be stupid with the rest of em.
Instead of every All-Star participating, the new format will feature just 12 NHL players battling one another in eight events. They'll receive points for where they place in those events. The individual player who accumulates the most points on the night will win $1 million.

Beat me to it. This sounds like a good idea but it’s hard to get excited about watching a bunch of millionaires compete to win a million dollars.
Why not have each player pick a charity, like a kids hospital or make a wish or something, and each player brings two or three people who benefit to be representatives of the charity and they can participate in the event.
The points the players earn determines how much is donated to their charity and the winner gets the extra million from the NHL donated to their charity. Gives to good causes, brings some underprivileged people to a cool event, and is good PR.
Hopefully whoever wins does this.

Is there anything McD can't do? Jokes aside, I'd rather have the league's top player(s) giving advice on what competitions to hold then a bunch of old men in suits in a boardroom thinking how many jersey sales they can make off this. Pretty obvious with these suggestions that even the players thought it was BS. I also hope that the million dollar prize the player wins goes to charity.
