Billions of cicadas to swarm the midwest this month..

Coming soon: Brood XIII. It sounds like a bad horror movie. But it’s actually the name of the billions of cicadas expected to emerge this month in parts of the Midwest after spending 17 years underground.

Cute little devils are they not?
We get them here every year...the sound they make at night drives me nuts, but the blond finds them "soothing".
I cant imagine them in the "billions" though. Ugh.

my lack of appreciation for the environment, and short-sightedness, compells me to want to have all creepy-crawlies exterminated from the face of the earth

Yeah..these things are creepy for sure.
We usually dont see them til late June or July, but when they come out, you sure know it.
I used to clean the pool every day and when i would there would inevitably be a few of them floating lifeless in the water, but because of being in there so long they would bloat up somewhat. They resemble the creatures that come out of the stomachs in the Alien movie series. Just hideous looking. However, the birds love eating them...so its all good that way.

Here is one that greeted me on my windowsill my first morning in Taiwan after a long long flight. They're really cool.
Edit: gotta figure out that picture posting a little more first

Not sure how big they are in the midwest, but when I was living in Malaysia, those suckers were huge. They were like some sort of flying terror of death when in a group.

Man I hope we're not in for a heavier dose than normal this year...although,...living in a new development we may not hear them so much at home.
It gets old....and I usually associate their 'call' with good old 95/95 weather that we get every summer.....95 F, 95% humidity and freaking cicada's@!
