April 26-28 next year dodgers play three games in Toronto. Odds on him getting booed?

It was definitely not kosher how he and his agent orchestrated the whole thing but that's pro sports. Tampering, and playing underhanded is part of the way of doing business when so much money is at stake. One thing to remember is that hype dies down much faster than it comes up. Look at year after year who the best players are and how they died down after some time. We don't have to look far in Vlad's rise and fall. To play two positions is putting strain on his body and if he gets injured and experiences any prolonged bad play, his stock decreases, and so does coverage. The odds are this contract will blow up in their face.

And some posting about the special treatment he'll be receiving vs. other players, are right. It's going to piss off a lot of his teammates who are stars themselves. Part of being a team player is being treated the same...not given preferential treatment. Of course it'll roll off the backs of some, but for some it'll be an annoyance.

As for the deferral of salary, I don't know about the tax implications, but I guarantee you if we landed him and he did that he'd be seen as the greatest team player ever. I temporarily think he's scum for using the Jays though.

It doesn't help avoid federal taxes, and probably wouldn't have been a benefit to take a contract of this structure in Canada.

That's my thought as well, the CRA likely wouldn't allow this.
Read somewhere today that the money the Jays were offering almost the same money as the Dodgers. Crazy. But Canadian tax rules were likely a lot different than the IRS.

Sure people might have said that for PR, but no one thinks right now he is a great teammate. He basically holds his team hostage his positional demands. Having him as a pitcher on five days rest (so six man rotation) didn’t help their starting pitching. Then when not pitching he’s not even playing the OF where presumably he could be average.

I think what most people have issue with is the underhand way this went down with leaks and such and the obvious conclusion that the dodgers were his choice all along. Then you got idiots like Heyman coming out and saying we don’t deserve an Ohtani compared to the storied dodgers and it’s no doubt Jays fans and Canadians are going to be annoyed.

I assume he’s not really taking on any credit risk and that they built in language so Dodgers will be required to fund this liability similar to a pension fund. Otherwise this is quite likely the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.

I guess the tax angle is that he avoids CA state tax (or any state income tax) if he is retired and living elsewhere. He’d still be subject to federal taxes.

In a league without a salary cap where AAV doesn’t matter, I wish they’d report these deals in today’s dollars.

That’s the 46 million being charged to the CBT. Basically that 700 million in todays terms. So yes better than say Judges contract but not by a ton. Just think of it as a 10/460 with deferred salary. Makes more sense than the other way.

Not convinced there’s a CRA angle here. The contract is backloaded, the cra is still only going to tax on your earnings this year, not some future cash you don’t have today. Not an accountant though but just don’t think that would be at play here.

Yep. Rubs me the wrong way too. I love the player when he plays but dislike him as a person.

This is why I can never get behind baseball. It's fairer to have a cap league, which imo is why NHL and NFL will always be the better sports to watch for me.

100%, but it's sports, it's meaningless. We watch, cheer and boo for any number of reasons and it's all silly.

It's not meaningless, I now hate Ohtani more than McDavid.

I don't know...it's not really Ohtani's fault.

I will forever hate any Oiler player more than Ohtani. Not picking your team in free agency isn't some giant snub...especially when the other team gives you $700M (deferred or not).

No, but the using a team for leverage and getting the entire media to leak or not leak information to your benefit makes you an #######.

McDavid plays for a rival yes, and he whines and dives a lot, yes. But he never snubbed anyone and does all his media obligations and I can cheer for him if he ever gets to play for Canada.

Did his agents leak the info though? Think it was more just that Dodgers reporter being an idiot.

Or did a bunch of people see the flight tracker information and things went into override from a hype perspective.

Also sometimes I wonder if there are some favours being played by agents and organizations to build relationships...his agency also represents Bichette.

Even before Friday, it's the whole I'm so special you can't talk about any negotiations or where I am or else we won't sign, you gotta keep it real secret. Like it mattered, he was going to the Dodgers all along. All that stuff about he was in Toronto with Kikuchi a month ago, he was in Dunedin. All staged. #######.

Morosi posting about the plane was also quite questionable.

Yeah, I don't think he would just base that off of fan speculation. It had to have been one of his trusted sources who was fed false info.
