IDK, do you really want to be taking advice from Dave if he can't add to 100?

It's called rounding. It's never worth the effort to make something equal 100.0%, especially when used to show relative values or trends.

I have a friend who’s similar to that, but he’s excel spreadsheet guy correcting the tiniest things. Completely pointless and not impacting the entire thing, but thank god you pored over every cell.

Why do pedestrians stand as close to curb as possible? Most intersections have some sort of light standard or telephone pole that provides some sort of protection should something happen…why stand in front of, rather than next to it?

Some poor toddler was hit as a result of a vehicle collision that sent the vehicle up into the sidewalk. Every time I see someone standing inches from the curb waiting to cross I wonder wtf you would do that.

I sometimes see people standing OFF the curb actually on the road while they are waiting. I used to see it all the time when I worked near Chinook Center, people getting off the train and heading to the mall. Just standing on the road waiting. I always used to think “well if you get hit, you can’t sue anyone” (no idea if this is legally true).

Yeah, I walk across Memorial at Edmonton Trail to get to work and I always stand with the light pole between me and the oncoming traffic. I don't know if it will really help at all if someone goes out of control and onto the sidewalk, but it's better than nothing.

Has a light pole ever withstood any kind of collision or stopped a car dead in its tracks?

It’s sad a kid was killed, but it sounds like they couldn’t have done much if a car ran up onto the sidewalk.

It would depend on the design of the pole and the nature of the collision.

Older style poles were basically logs planted into the ground and hitting them was like hitting a tree. At about 2 minutes into this video, they show a car driving full speed into an old style pole. The pole doesn't have much give.

There are still some of these wooden ones around the city. Like here in Renfrew: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NbDk6gbtRq46gEQt8

There are also old metal ones too which won't break away in a collision: https://maps.app.goo.gl/woiLkfU1YAYFmQvy5

These were finally replaced in late 2021 or 2022 with modern ones that are designed to breakaway in a collision: https://maps.app.goo.gl/qSBp76D2ZkrWd6Yy5

I'd guess there are probably still quite a few of the non-breakaway style around the city.

On most of the busy roads, the poles are likely breakaway style. These are safer for the people in the car and should absorb some of the energy of the impact.

If a car hits one of these head-on at full speed, you're not likely to survive if you get hit regardless of where you're standing. There are many other types of collisions where the pole would provide at least some level of protection. Also, just being a few feet back from the corner gives you a little extra time to react if there's a collision in the intersection that pushes one of the vehicles onto the sidewalk.

Kid didn't die, unless it was in the past couple of hours. News earlier said the kiddo had improved and was stable.

There are two pukers in the world, those that can feel it coming and prepare and those that are taken by surprise.

One must acknowledge the truth that even though there are no posts, the thread still exists despite the fact that in reality...there is no Spoon.

Realized it was my Grandpa's birthday today. Noted it on fb, added a couple of pictures of him in his uniform in WW1, then got a fair amount of comments from people being flabbergasted at the WW1 part. I guess that's odd? He was 97 when he died, he'd be 133 today, if people lived that long. He's been gone far longer than the amount of years I had with him, but I still miss him. He was a great storyteller and he had a lot of good (& true!) stories he would share with us. He always made sure he'd made some apple leather when he knew our family was coming to visit, as I was pretty much the only grandkid that would eat it. He was as avid a reader as I am, and had the most beautifully leather bound set of a kids story/poetry series (8 books) that I poured over and read through many times as a little kid, and he made sure that I would receive them after he died. I read through them with my kids when they were little and now I'm reading them through with my grandson, the 4th generation to read them...warm memories today.

Most of the staff where I work are ESL workers. A lot of the work we do ends up being used by Ironworkers. I do question if it's worth the effort to make them correct spelling mistakes that will be sent to guys who really don't read words anyways. But I sill do it!

We're set to get a new puppy in 5 days. The breeder called us and told us that the entire litter has fleas. I want to put an end to it now and walk away, does anyone have experience with this? The breeder was reluctant to offer any kind of health guarantee until I pushed for it when we first contacted them. This is another red flag

Another red flag in addition to what? sounds like you were hesitant before, with the fleas you're dialed up enough to chase health guarantee, and then what?
