The Flames aren't a "quick retool" away from being a serious contender though. We have no star players. We need to draft and develop stars, that takes time.

Thinking a 27 year old will still be relevant/good at hockey when the Flames finally turn the corner is madness. Nylander is probably close to retirement by the time we're at that stage.

Unless your interested in more of what we've had for the last 15 years: scrape into the playoffs every second year 7th or 8th in conference, bounced in the first when we do make it. We can probably get back to that level while Nylander remains elite. Doesn't interest me, personally.

While I get that seems to be the goal, it is unlikely that the Flames can receive players as currently as good as the UFA’s they are trading. So there is likely nothing quick about it. Even if it actually works.

Risky to deal Vladar with Marky out but was thinking the same thing. Although Montreal still has 3 goalies so wonder if Tre will pivot there.

I don't think Brad is in a position to trade for a goaltender, but that is a pretty weak combination if Woll is out for any significant period.

A scenario like this is why they picked up Jones in the first place. They won't be trading for a goalie. Bigger problems there.

Time to pick out a shiny new team if that's what you expect. This team will never do a full rebuild or draft 1OA unless they get an unprotected 1st in a crazy trade some day.

Their goal is to make money by filling seats and getting into the playoffs as often as possible with as much star power as they can. They'll look at the recent drop in attendance as a result of losing #19 and #13. Getting another star player with some Calgary legacy is exactly what they want.

It's a crazy trade proposal, but if it were possible it is exactly what they would do.

At what rate do the Jackets look for a C from external resources? They’ve got plenty of good prospects to dangle.

You can't possibly know that. We could have more of what we had in the past 15 years if we tore it down and drafted high. How many years have the Sabres been following your blueprint for success? How has that worked out for them? People have this strange belief if you tear it down and rebuild that eventually equals success, actually teams that retool on the fly have a much more success rate.

I've mentioned it about a half dozen times here, that Toronto will not be trading Nylander.
1) Teams don't trade away point producers when they're contending, even at risk of losing them for nothing
2) He's been their best player this year
3) He's well liked
4) Leafs are seen as one of the favourites
5) Trading him would upset his teammates

There is almost no chance he's dealt. No matter how people like to slice the story, the Leafs will not deal him.

There is middle ground between diving for 1st OA and not making terrible signings to be better now. I'm hoping the Flames are at least not at the latter end of the spectrum anymore.

I don't think they have to go for 1st OA, just stop burning money and assets(including cap) by the truckload.

Teams that have had success retooling on the fly have generally had a decent core of elite players to retool around.

That decent core of elite players for the Flames is not currently on the team. Getting them in trades or in drafting in the middle is long odds.

The anti rebuild crowd always points at past Buffalo and past Edmonton regimes as to why it won't work. In response to that I'd say that building something takes time, and there's never any guarantee, but to use Edmonton or Buffalo as examples is to cite the worst case scenario. The Oilers and Sabres struggled because they were the worst two managed teams in the NHL, not because they rebuilt.

Those who oppose the idea of rebuilding seem to believe there's a lack of honour in it, but really I just see it as impatience.

People don't believe that tearing it down is the ultimate easy, guaranteed fix. They see it as a way forward that we haven't taken before, and quite frankly we're sick and tired of the current way this team runs. This mediocre season that we're currently mired in is exactly what pro-rebuild fans don't want anymore. The way that it was approached has been a waste of time. "We have a good team" Bean said. No, you misjudged your roster (and it was painfully obvious). This is a mediocre team with no elite talent.

What teams that have retooled on the go without an elite core have ANY actual success that is better than what the Flames have achieved in recent years? None of them have won the Stanley Cup, which has to be the ultimate goal.

I don't think they have to go for 1st OA, just stop burning money and assets(including cap) by the truckload.

What you are saying is that you want the team to make the right decision all the time and not make mistakes. That’s unreasonable.

They don’t set out to burn money. It’s easy to hindsight it now but at least 50% of the fans were excited when we signed Huby, Kadri and Weegar. It was a great way to move on from the disappointment of that summer.

It didn’t work out, but as a fan I respect that the team sunk that much money into getting some star power for the Flames. That was a ton of money and they certainly didn’t throw it away.

How has that worked out for them? People have this strange belief if you tear it down and rebuild that eventually equals success, actually teams that retool on the fly have a much more success rate.

Look at the roster and consider what it's going to look like without Tanev, Hanafin, and Lindholm. This team is heading to for a term of multiple seasons at the bottom of the NHL standings and there's not a lot that Conroy can do about it. You can't be retooling when you have one of the worst rosters in the NHL. It's going to be a rebuild whether the organization likes it or not.
