All those "find yourself" hikes gone to waste. Shame.

I don’t know, his responses on the reddit thread seem fair.

That said, I did say I would vote for him if he keeps it up, which so far is the kiss of death for any conservative politician (O’Toole, Pierre… now Farkas?). Sorry pals.

The role of being Mayor is all about gaining consensus. Working with Councillors, driving an agenda forward and collaborating.

Jeromy Farkas is unable to do any of this. He was one of the most unsuccessful Councillors in recent memory because he could not, and WOULD not work with anyone.

He is a failed experiment by the Manning Centre. Do not give this man another chance.

Being a contrarian is great for press clippings, but utterly toxic for democracy and good government.

Farkas' response to the menorah lighting is about strike 100 for me on him.
I had hoped that he had changed, but wasn't ready to believe it until he showed me in a meaningful way.
He's now slipped back into "I don't believe he's actually changed" territory.

His response on this is incredibly stupid. It completely ignores the nuance and context of the situation. Once the event got billed as a political event and a support of Israel/the war in Palestine, it was going to be a political landmine no matter what she did.

Saying not going to this event means she believes "you are free to be who you are, love who you love, and worship how you will-so long as you are not Jewish" is completely ingenuine. Her absence says nothing of those things, and he knows it.

Here's hoping there are many more of these to come.

Always thought Manning looked like Kane from Poltergeist 2.

NEW: Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean has been sanctioned by the city’s integrity commissioner after attending a golf tournament during the July 26 city council meeting. More to come.

McLean and Chu aren't even trying at this point, both just seem to vote against everything and never contribute anything useful.

Dan McLean

The Mayor and Council said I have to apologize for the not uncommon occurrence of attending part of a Council Meeting remotely while at an Industry Event that ran late, so here it is⬇️

Jasmine Mian

This isn’t about remote work.

Prioritizing a Shane Homes golf tournament over being in council is wrong. Full stop.

Some people are showing up to work, other people are campaigning.

I’ve heard your excuse that other cllrs were there too-by all means, let us know who! #yyccc

Lol, of course Dan McLean attended a Shane Wenzel event. Did Craig Chandler, Wyatt Claypool and Jonathan Denis make up his foursome? I can't believe Sean Chu wasn't swinging the clubs too! But maybe we'll find out!

Not good reception for this council and mayor thus far according to poll:

New ThinkHQ survey shows lowest ever ratings for council, mayor

According to the ThinkHQ survey, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek’s approval started low and has declined ever since. Her December 2023 approval rating is at 30 per cent, with 61 per cent disapproval. The ThinkHQ release said that this is the lowest approval rating for a mayor in Calgary’s history.

The polling shows that the mayor’s disapproval is most concentrated in established communities with households earning more than $125,000 per year.

Not surprised at the poll results. Kourtney Branagan has been a disappointment in ward 11. The only positive is she isn't Farkas (Farkas Classic, I'm still super skeptical of New Farkas©). She made comments early in her term that she wasn't going to work the overtime and has been pretty invisible on local issues like Glenmore Landing.

Someone I know ran against her, and there was super shady background stuff that happened to push Branagan as the chosen candidate. I guess I'm not completely objective.

On one hand, this seems to be one of the less drama-filled City Councils we've had in a long time, but on the other... what are they doing? They're a little too invisible.

I'd argue any council would be getting hammered in the polls right now. Nenshi classic, and even the alternate timeline Farkas as mayor one.

This result is sort of surprising but not surprising at the same time.

On the one hand, Council did some things early on that rattled a lot of people for different reasons (climate city, the arena deal etc.); but on the other hand, they have been pretty invisible (as Wormius correctly noted).

Is invisibility in municipal politics a good thing or a bad thing?

On the flip side, I would suspect most city governments are taking a massive hit in popularity as we move out from post-covid fallout, high interest rates, housing issues, homeless, crime etc.
