Personally, I don't think that Conroy wants to burn years of Pelletier, Wolf and Zary. It wouldn't surprise me if he is focusing on D+1 or D+2 players and less on 1sts.

I would guess that the ask for Tanev is a high risk/high ceiling C or D. Sort of a Poirier type.

For Hanafin and Lindholm I would guess a late first or second paired with a recent high pedigree prospect. Someone that went 12-24 in the last draft or 8-15 in the 2021 draft.

No one ever "hangs up" like that.

What happens is GM says "that's too much" and Conroy says OK, maybe we'll talk later after I take a few more calls and we get closer to the TDL.

It can mean many, many things. It could mean that Tanev isn't worth a first. It could mean he's worth a first but this particular GM doesn't want to pay that. And it could easily mean that this particular GM sim0ly wants to try and drive a hard bargain.

He may still be very willing to trade a first, but hopes not to.

And, the closer teams get to the playoffs, the more comfortable they feel giving up draft picks and the better-able they are to fit contracts into their cap structure.
