An electric El Camino would be awesome. This is not awesome. And you could actually fit a bike in the back of an El Camino(78.5" vs 72").

I looked at that this morning as well, and it seems like a massive design flaw.

Gotta think that people inclined to buy a truck like that want it for outdoor activities, and it doesn't seem made for that?

Maybe closer to an electric Baja.

Rear wheel steering is cool. The underbed storage has a drain so you can put ice in it and use it for tailgating. The frunk is oddly small. Maybe you could put a golf bag in there.

If you are going to watch someone dig out his backyard, tunnel under his house, and now just started digging out his driveway so his Delorean can elevate up from underground, it's this guy:

Don't have time to watch all that, but could really have used his advice on how to get rid of all that clay.

The cyber truck is more likely to push innovation and progress in the EV market backwards than forwards.

You make enough jokes and people are going to stop taking you seriously.

I assumed the Cybertruck is a smokescreen or test bed for his other two projects for the roadster 2 and the Semi. I don't think Musk is truly envisioning massproduction of Cybertrucks for the road. I think he's basically trying to create the first EV "Delorean" type of collectible where it'll always turn heads. Then he's going to try and milk the #### out of it by limiting access to it and putting it in a ton of movies and video games.

At this point I think Elon is given way too much credit, and most of the things he does is "because LOL".

I mean the preponderance of the evidence seems to suggests there's little "planning" going on with him at this point. It's whatever the ketamine tells him to do

At the same time if someone looks at the current market of vehicles sold, there is obviously a huge market for a 'truck.'

Being able to make an EV truck is huge.

However, one does wonder how big the market really is.

Quote:
DETROIT — Ford Motor
will cut planned production of its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup roughly in half next year, marking a major reversal after the automaker significantly increased plant capacity for the electric vehicle in 2023.
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/11/f-15...s-in-half.html

At the same time

Quote:
Ford F-Series sales (see running F-Series sales) continued to lead in the full-size pickup segment in Q3 2023, with a 13 percent increase to 190,477 units last quarter.
https://fordauthority.com/2023/10/fo...%2C110%20units.

So overall truck sales are up, EV truck sales are down. Not a good sign.

I'm guessing a big part of slow sales for EV trucks is the sales split between urban and suburban/rural buyers. Drivers outside of urban areas are going to be reluctant to go EV when they have much more limited charging infrastructure and they drive long distances more frequently. Add in the huge drop in range when you hook up to a trailer and it is easy to see why pickup sales might be slow.

It's mostly because the starting price is essentially 90k, they're not building to scale where they make any profit on them, and interest rates mean all large ticket purchases are down. I don't think it says anything about the demand for electric trucks themselves. Entry level regular pickups are much, much lower. Like $30-40k cheaper

But they are also losing money or not making any profit on them. The problem is you need a huge battery to overcome crappy aerodynamics, which increases weight and energy demand.

There is an easy practical solution though. All trucks should be required to be PHEV. Yes, you add complexity, but you reduce the need for a huge battery and powerful ICE. You also overcome all the limitations of a BEV.

Ford.com (US site) says an F150 Lightning starts at just under $50,000. The cheapest crew cab (Supercrew) gasser starts at just over $40,000.

Was just going to post this.

I think most people would be surprised what a new F150 costs, even the most basic model.

I think Fuzz is right, the electric version simply isn't good enough to replace the ICE version. Especially if gas prices come down.

I can search the Ford dealerships all around me and find dozens of super crew gas models for $57k. Only found one lightning below 80k and only 3 below 90k Canadian.

Every car with Autopilot recalled:

Quote:
More than 2 million Tesla electric vehicles are subject to a new safety recall today. At issue is the much-criticized Autopilot driver-assistance feature, more specifically the Autosteer component.

At one time, Tesla claimed that Autosteer cut crashes by 40 percent—a statistic that turned out to be completely false once a third party analyzed the data. Now, following an ongoing engineering analysis by the National Highway Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation that found Tesla has inadequate driver monitoring and that the system could lead to "foreseeable misuse," the automaker has finally reacted.

Nice thing about over the air software updates is software fixes are easy and don't need a dealership visit.
