Imagine how good they would be if they actually played 60 minutes a night.
I always see this and it makes me think of what Sutter said a long time ago. Every NHL team is good at times. The difference between a team at the top of the standings and at the bottom is just often they play that way

OK, first of all, this was a 2-0 loss. Remember, it doesn't matter how many goals you score in a game. All that matters is the order they get scored in. Coming back late is cheating and doesn't count.
It's quite clear this team has absolutely no talent and can't possibly win. It's also clear this team has the worst coaches in the world, who single-handedly prevent the team from winning with all that incredible talent it has.
The power play is so bad, it can only score if the other team's power play comes on the ice to help it out.
And what is this happening in the net? They're actually putting a wolf on the ice and shooting pucks at it? I'm calling the SPCA!

Exactly.
Let's take tonight. Poor first and had 2 pp's and two goals set them back.
Better in the second. More energy and generated chances. But Carolina still looked fine.
Third period did the Flames play miles better? Sure, they scored 3, but:
1) First goal was a very good and risky pinch that Andersson makes on a routine point shot. Does he pinch aggressive like that in a 1-1 game? Probably not.
2) Second and third goals are not great goals given up by the Canes goalie. Squeaker through on Ruzicka and third goals he lost net like Vladar did last game.
So, the effort in the third wasn't a bunch better than the second, but, unlike many posters here with second intermissions drive bys, not to be seen again, Flames stick with the plan and wait for those opportunities or mistakes, then get a goalie interference call to assist, and hold on for win.

Oilers had a 53.9% expected goal share last night. The Flames had a 67% percent expected goal share tonight.
Not sure how the Flames numbers were that high, but I checked twice.
Second was weird...felt like Flames didn't have the puck (and the Corsi shows that) but also shows that Flames dominated changes and high danger in the 2nd.
One thing with Wolf and it's already been mentioned, but just elite puck tracking.
Even on both goals against that were deflections, he sees the tip and is following it, he just can't react quite in time to save it. But eyes are tracking it and he reacts, just couldn't get to it.
Honeslty that's such a big part of the game at the NHL level. I do worry at times that some of those deflections like tonight would maybe just hit a bigger goalie. But give me the small, athletic goalie every day, so much more entertaining to watch.

It's interesting that in order to compensate for the lack of forward scoring talent, the Flames are activating their D and using the talent on the back end to help put pucks in the net.
The D have factored heavily into their last number of wins.
It's good because it's helping them collect wins, but hopefully the guys that should be putting up points figure that out so that the team doesn't need to rely on the D as much to contribute.
Lindholm, Mangiapane and Dube need to do more for this team offensively.
What the kids are doing right now to have success isn't complex. They're just going to the right places with urgency. The vets need to be less sheepish than they're being out there.
This is one of the reasons this team can't go scorched earth, they have good prospects that continually contribute. This team is resilient.
Well and a big part of that is Wolf... scorched earth won't work if Wolf is who people think Wolf might be...if he's the level of goalie in the NHL that's he's been in junior and the AHL then he could single handledly keep you from top 5 picks even if you blow it up.
