Every team in the race will be able to take on either Lindholm or Hanifin at the deadline with retention. Thier cap hits will be incredibly low at that point. There hypothetically should be vast interest from at least 10 teams for each player and a bidding war should arise. They don't even have overly exaggerated NTC that block potential bidders either (no trade protection at all for Lindy and 8 team no trade list for Hanifin).
All of this is hypothetical of course but the Flames have to play hardball and set the price that they want. With the amount of attention that both will generate the Flames have to act accordingly.

A sign and trade for Hanifin was a dream scenario. If it’s just a rental at the deadline, it’ll be just fine compensation. The buyers are competing against themselves at that point, and affordable top pairing d men don’t pop up for your cup run very often.

100% agree. The peril of playing hardball is being left alone at the altar at 12:01pm after the deadline and having an asset walk for free. Look at dan hamhuis. Canucks played hardball and he walked for nothing. The closer we get to the deadline and these players are still on our roster, the more nervous we should feel. We play hardball and no one meets our price, then we are left with nothing. Our ufas are not the only players in play and teams will have options. I’m a fan of getting business done ahead of the deadline. There was lots of howling over the return we got for Zadorov, imagine what it would be if Conny held firm on his price and he walked for nothing. And Conny has 3 players he should be moving, not just one. So lots of moving parts and juggling required.

Well if we lose a 5th and some pick 3 yrs from now because Zadorov walks, I think I can live with that.
You don’t make a bad trade because you are scared of losing also

I will be genuinely sad to see Lindholm and Hanifin go.
I truly believe that they were great Flames, and will have success where ever the land for a long while.
That said, the Flames have to trade them. It's time to start over.

I don't think anyone needs to be nervous the closer it gets to deadline day without Hanifin or Lindholm being traded. I'd rather Conroy play hardball - it's a risk, but I think holding out for the best deal possible is the best way to handle this, rather than caving because you're afraid.

I'm pretty sure that if the Flames walked Zad to free agency and lost him, you would be at the front of the line to complain about it.

Lindholm yes. Hanifin would depend on return versus what he would sign for here. And whether he would even sign for the right price. I think his time frame matches what the Flames are doing. But if he's worth more on a trade, fine.
Tanev's a funny one. I can see him getting a good return. But I also see him not costing much in terms of cap hit or term on his next deal, and if we're bringing in a bunch of kids on D, he's a good guy to have around.

Tanev as well. The guy is the very definition of a hockey player. It's a shame he joined the Flames on the back end of his career as you don't see too many players like him anymore that just goes out there and battles every night like he does putting his body in harm's way.

What if Tanev gets traded as a pure rental with a "wink wink" deal from the Flames? Give him a chance to go to a contender and chase a cup and then returns to mentor the young guys. Lets his family stay here as well

To get the player.
The Flames don't have to do Boston any favours. Two comparable deal packages and take the other one.
Plus there is a lot of real estate between rental price and signed player price ... just get within the goal posts and they get the player.

I think this is something the Flames should be mindful of but I think it’s also very low risk. It’s worth mentioning that Hanifin and Lindholm are considered the two most valuable assets at this point on the market.I suspect the Flames will have several attractive offers on both.
Hanhuis was 33 in15/16 time and out of the league four years later. The wheels would have to completely fall off for that to be the case with either Hanifin or Lindholm. At their age and their contracts with retained salaries, teams that are in a window to contend for a cup shouldn’t be beating around the bush with lowball offers.

Exactly right. If they won't pay the "extension in hand" price then they risk not getting the player not only for this year but for the extension years as well (because who knows whether he'll change his mind when the UFA offers start rolling in).

As you say, there is a lots of real estate between the rental deal and the signed deal. Boston would only need to pay a bit more than the rental price.

Query as to how Conroy or any GM for that matters is supposed to know "its the best deal possible" when it's presented?
The value of players at and near the dead line changes from year to year, so there is always guesswork involved.

Set your price, if it meets or gets as close to as possible, pull the trigger.
