Wild 5 Flames 2
Wild 5 Flames 2
- Flames terrible for the first 25 minutes
- Vladar chased (not his fault)
- Wolf mops up (not his fault)
- Solovyov has an adventurous night with his first assist

Solovyov looked really raw, but what I liked to see was after being so 'bad', he still had that moxie to try to be a game changer, and I thought he kept his nervousness in check. Showed some resilience. For instance, I thought in Desimone's last game, he got rattled and stayed rattled.

Generic bottom pairing through the rest of the season should see us comfortable with a high draft pick now that Markstrom is out. Maybe one of them can step up, but it feels like we’ll limp along like this till the deadline when we dump everyone.
It’s a contest between short term pain of losing this season and the long term health of the franchise. Zadorov’s public trade request may be an actual turning point for the franchise… despite being a #5 D. Just taking on too much water to bail out now.

Didn’t see any mention of the Blasty mascot. I hadn’t seen it before. Highlight of the night, not sure for better or worse

I think it's score affects, and if I used score adjusted it would show what you'd expect to see.
The Wild got up three and put it on coast.

That's how I see it.
You can't win with an AHL pairing, especially a team that was middling to begin with.
Zadorov may have helped by providing clarity the team needs to avoid making long term mistakes.

Yeah, last night was a good example of why I would prefer to see the 2 weak links separated. I would rather have a top pair, and 2 ok pairs, where a good player can support the weaker player, than have all the eggs in the top 2 baskets, and a pairing that just gets caved.
People wanted the Flames to trade these defensemen for youth and picks. Well, the price is that the defense will suck.

I don't think coast is the right word - lockdown is better, IMO.
But yeah, definitely score effects. The Flames didn't even know who was playing net at the other end, until they were down 3.

Yes.. but only (ideally) until the prospects develop. I'd rather spend the next 4 years rolling the dice on that than muddling forward with our current squad.
I'm a fan - prove me wrong and go on a 10 game tear guys! Bottom pairing guys - show that you are diamonds in the rough and deserve an NHL slot.
But if you can't do that (and I'm pretty sure they can't) - let's try something different before 2030.
Sorry, this is getting OT from the game summary. It's just that I watched the loss and didn't really feel bad about it. It's the nasty medicine needed to fix the disease. And it's possibly the direct result of Zadorov going public.

Anything goes in a game story thread!
And I agree 100%. I like wins. Full stop. But at least there's a silver lining if things don't go well.
The Flames won't burn it to the ground, but at least it looks like they have some good young pieces, and what looks like a path that will add more.

All true. This loss just felt worse because it wasn't the tempo that made losses fun before. No Pospisil, Zary wasn't as fun to watch (despite the goal), and the team as a whole was sluggish and not executing to the best of their abilities. It just wasn't a good effort. I wasn't even that stoked to see Wolf because it wasn't a good situation for him.

Was happy with the progression from "Soloviev" to "Solovyov" during the game by Hrudey. Good in-game adjustment.
Hoping to hear Boomer make the same adjustment.

Yeah an AHL 3rd pairing is going to cost you.
But I guess I'll counter with fact that Flames still have their top 4 intact. And teams do win through injuries etc. on the back end.
I feel like that top 4 should produce better results than it does because individually I like each of the players. Admittedly I didn't watch much of the game last night but what I did see, it wasn't just the bottom pair getting eaten up.

Yeah it was down to three things for me.
1) Wolf appearance
2) Solovyov first NHL point
3) Huberdeau with maybe his best period as a Flame
Rest was a boring mess!

Yeah and Andersson / Weegar just doesn't work, and hasn't worked all year.
If you're going t break something up I guess you break that one up because a) it's two righties and b) they still haven't achieved break even this year in play driving.
Too many turnovers.

If we really bottom out during this stretch here which was going to be difficult with Markstrom as well, do we keep him away from the team and try to dump him as well?

Lately the way I have thought about it is:
what it would take over the next 10 games for the Flames to get on a 90 point pace. Right now, Flames would need 16 points in next 10 games. That would be 91 point pace.
It's starting to get harder to believe, need to shrink that number.
