There is zero chance that players ever agree to this.

And the strongest franchises wouldn’t want to either, as it gives them a huge advantage.

It's a double-edged sword. The most desirable franchises get an advantage in signing UFAs, but then their rosters get cluttered up with overpaid players that they can't get rid of.

I could easily see the Board of Governors wanting to abolish NMCs while continuing to allow NTCs.

Sounds like a plan, but won’t work in practice.

Asking for a trade is not an official process in the NHL. The team does not need to trade you.

And no player would ever “ask for a trade “. But the news that he wanted to be traded would start showing up in media. But is wasn’t an official request by the player.

I never fault players for wanting to play for their hometown only. You earn free agency, if that's the only place he wants to sign then why should he sign somewhere else just to do the Flames a favour.

I wish more Calgary kids only wanted to play for the Flames.

Looking at you Cale Makar.

Also I'm not sure it's 100% true with Hanifin , I've heard there are a couple markets he's actually interested in re-signing in but not a super long list.

Why should a player forego free agency? I am not sure I understand why they should just willingly give up UFA status. Also not sure if it is true.

Honzek is going to play for team Slovakia (he's on the preliminary roster), and that looks like the only one.

Slovakia's camp is Dec.11-15, with main camp starting on the 18th.

It’s not Hanifin’s fault the Flames have held onto him this long. They should have worked harder to trade him last year/in the off season.

Hanifin is months away from free agency, dude should absolutely make use of every tool he can to play where he wants and earn what he can.

Wouldn't make sense to just limit yourself to Boston. That's pretty stupid of Hanifin's camp.

If Boston can't acquire or sign you then what? Going to go the Johnny Gaudreau route?

His quickest way out of town is expanding his list of trade destinations (that he would extend with).

I think it's likely similar to Tkachuk in that he has a small list of teams he's willing to forego free agency to re-sign with.

I've heard that Florida, Boston, Arizona (this one surprised me) are on the list but not sure if that's the full list.

In the end this is on Treliving (and Conroy he was AGM) for leaving all the UFAs in limbo. These guys should have been shopped in season last year and approaching last years trade deadline.

In the end now it feels like Hanifin and Lindholm will likely just be moved as rentals and maybe not as pieces with extensions attached.

Also I think it's different than the Gaudreau situation in that I think the Hanifin camp knows Boston is interested, which is much different to Gaudreau and Philly. Sweeney has wanted Hanifin going back to the 2015 draft and tried to move up to get him then.

If he is in a rush to get out of town yes. And it could well be that he really wants to go to Boston and is willing to roll the dice during UFA and is indifferent on whether he plays the last 18 weeks before UFA in Calgary or somewhere else. One thing is for sure, if he signs a longterm deal anywhere other than Boston he is closing the door on playing in Boston.

I also think that the report could be bull####. But if you play almost 8 and a half years to get to knocking on the door of UFA status and the ability to choose where you live I doubt “getting out of town” is a super high priority in the final 18-20 weeks before you hit UFA.

Really hoping Conroy can pull off some solid returns for these UFAs. I really struggle to get a sense of what tanev should return. He has a well-deserved reputation around the league as a solid shutdown defenceman who is a warrior on the ice. The media love to praise those kind of guys so it might lift his value as lots of fan bases would accept paying a decent price for him due to that reputation.

But watching Tanev so far this year… he seems like he has lost quite a bit of that solid play he has always had. Feels like he has been guilty of so many giveaways and mental mistakes that he never used to make. Those kind of things happen to every player eventually of course. This is not a recency bias because of what happened tonight against Minnesota… I’ve seen it all season. I thought Tanev was playing the worst of the 5 regular defencemen (including Zadorov) in the line up for most of the season so far. I wonder if scouts for teams interested in Tanev have seen the same thing and teams are only willing to pay so much for what he is right now.

So after the poor return for Zadorov, I really don’t know what Tanev should return in a trade. No doubt he is a warrior who can make some big shot blocks. And his reputation may still garner a good return.

Even as rentals both players should return 1sts.

But somehow I see that turning into 2nds and another team's sharangovich equivalent, because "the market dictated so"

I would rather shoot for top prospects even if it means you are bringing back a later pick.

Lambert + later pick for retained Lindholm (Winnipeg makes a lot of sense with current depth). Would take back a bad contract like Nate Schmidt if they were willing to make the deal Lambert + 1st.
Guenther + later pick for Hanifin
Bahl + 3rd for Tanev

The market for both Hanifin and Lindholm will be set by Conroy as they are the best players currently on the market. I understand the worth of top prospects but both Lindy and Hanifin are great players to add to a team.

If Conroy plays his cards right here he could really speed up this rebuild. Adding firsts is cool but you still have to wait for the picks to develop and have the risk of them busting. Take aim at players who are already close and developing well, even if that means you are getting less picks to take your shot at the draft.

Firstly, maybe he only wants to play in Boston? He may have a secondary list, but perhaps they exist only as a backup plan.

Secondly, he doesn't really need to get out of town now, with UFA pending. It will come soon enough.

Unless you know what his end game is, it's impossible to criticize his strategy.

Most teams interested in obtaining talent at the deadline are cap strapped, so trading players who are close to contributing is likely a tough sell for them. They need those cheap players coming along as they cannot afford to sign fill those roles in UFA. That's why in the majority of cases, it's draft picks that get traded. And it's likely that if prospects are included, it won't be blue chip ones.

At the end of the day, the market for Lindholm and Hanifin won't be set by Conroy, it will be set by the demand for those players.
