You have a team that gives up few shots, but has a high expected goals against total suggesting the goaltender is lifting above his counting stats.
Not sure who else you'd pick.

Backlund or Coleman or Weegar, probably?

I'd say Kadri is making a pretty good case. Since the rookies started playing on his line, his line has become a legit top 6 NHL line. Kadri's numbers are mind-blowing, but that's true of the whole team.

All good names ... and fine choices.
Just suggesting thinking Markstrom is the team MVP at this point isn't out to lunch.

It's Weegar for me. Our best defenseman imo.

I did say arguably MVP, so I understand how some might disagree but I've watched every game and hes definitely my pick.
My argument is you cannot have comeback wins without your goalie shutting the door. Hes held us in games we have no business winning on multiple nights.

Except in most of the recent wins, while he's been exciting to watch, he hasn't scored.
Who was more important in their previous OT win? Zary who made a couple cool plays that didn't pan out or, say, Huberdeau who had 2 points (including in OT) and should havehad more but for a call back and a Coleman leg.

I'm sure you're not applying that a direct causal relationship. I like Zary as much as anyone, but it's not Zary plays and Flames better as a vaccuum.
And I'm good with other choices.
I see Weegar, Kadri and Markstrom as my finalists.

It's the only one worth using IMO... he's a goalie so a stat that demonstrates the percentage of shots that he prevents from becoming goals against is all you really need to know. A goal against is a goal against regardless of whether it comes off a 5 alarm chance or off a softie.

Sucks for Marky. He really rebounded so far this year. Big opportunity for Wolf to prove himself, hope he takes it and runs with it

Do they actually? I suspect it is rather a handful of teams that do.

I know save % isn't everything, but if a goalie with an .897 save % is your MVP, how bleak of a picture does that paint? lol

Markstrom has been great at times, and good at times, and not so good at times - just like the rest of the roster. They have won as a team, and lost as a team. And nothing speaks to that more than having 15 guys with at least 3 goals, and no one with more than 7. There has been no standout MVP so far this year.
As to the issue at hand, and the topic of the thread, this is exactly why you don't trade away goalies prematurely. Injuries will happen, and all of the goalies were going to get their chances. Well here we are, and Vladar and Wolf are now going to get some chances.
Again, NO ONE wants to see players get injured. But they do, occasionally, and honestly, this is a perfect opportunity for the team to get some evaluation of Vladar and Wolf - exactly what they need, so they can make some longer term decisions.

I see Huska saying that he expects Markstrom back a lot sooner than later.

Guess we'll disagree on that.
A goaltender behind a great defensive team will have less high quality and be able to have a higher save percentage.
That's why we've seen xGA and xGAx added in recent seasons.
Provides better clarity.

Agreed.
Could mean either your roster isn't that good or your team defense (coaching) is weak.

I’d probably put Hanifin and Weegar as our MVPs so far this season. I think both guys have stepped their games up notably this season.
Markstrom has to be in the conversation though.
Coleman and Kadri have been our most consistent forwards, but Zary’s arrival has him as my “most impactful” forward.

Yeah, we all expect great things from Wolf (or hope for them anyway). But he's had two NHL games. Look great in his end of year game and in the one this year it was, frankly, hard to assess him.
