I hope we can do better than that for a Leaf

Only thing I want from Toronto is picks. I want none of their prospects. Too hard to get a read on the most overhyped prospect pool in the league.
I also don’t think they’d table Robertson. He’s found his game and is an active contributing member of their day to day roster.

It basically has to be a 1st coming back for Tanev then and I’m not sure he’ll get that

The only young player that I like from the Leafs is Topi Neimela. Tanev 50% should get that return, and anything else is underwhelming.

Why is it that I want Leafs to be in on Tanev (or any other Flame) only to lose out to another team yet again at the 11th hour?

In a perfect world, Tanev goes to a team out east that I don't hate for a king's ransom. I would cheer that team on to win the cup. If he goes to Toronto, he is as dead to me as Brodie and Giordano became (and I loved both here, and quite a lot at that). Zadorov in Vancouver is dead to me.
Best returns trump all else, but it is nice when a player I like ends up on a team I like for a cup run.

Matt Knies is a stud, but the Leafs won't trade him, unless Treliving wants to pay us back for his mistakes. I would agree with Harry Lime- Topi Niemela would be an outstanding aquisition, but another player in their system is 6'2"C Fraser Minten- who earned a spot on the Leafs out of camp. Good speed, two-way acumen, IQ, and all-around ability.

I would think that a retained Tanev may well bring back a late 1st from some team, as long as there are multiple bidders.

Tanev at 50% should warrant a conditional 2nd/1st and Niemela/Minten. Maybe a 1st depending on if they make the playoffs or Tanev playing a number of games for them.
I’m sure we’ll get a book on the conditions if we’re dealing with Brad.

With how much it seems Tre wants him and the need that TO has it seems like we should be able to get a premium from them. With how bad their cap situation is we should also be able to boost the return as well by taking the maximum retain % available as well.

You just make it sound so easy. Get a top 10 pick and turn it into Makar/Heiskanen/Hughes. Unfortunately some of those picks turn out into Gudbranson(3rd), Juolevi(5th), or Reinhart(4th).
|
I never said it was easy, but you’ll never trade for a #1 in his prime so your only option is drafting it.
You can try and spin it to fit your narrative, we know where Hanifin was drafted but like your last sentence that doesn’t mean they’ll ever be #1.
But without the pick you don’t have a chance, so the chance to me far outweighs the known commodity who wants far too much money and term for a guy who straight up said he wants to play in the US.
Let’s not make it more than it has to be lol.

Trying to peg what some of our UFAs would be worth in a trade by looking at last year's trade activity:
Elias Lindholm comparables:
To TOR: O'Reilly, Acciari
To STL: Abramov, Gaudette, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
To NYR: Tarasenko, Mikkola
To STL: Blais, Skinner, 1st, 4th
To NYI: Horvat
To VAN: Beauvillier, Raty, 1st
I think that sets Lindholm's value at somewhere around a 1st and a 2nd, or a 1st and a 3rd.
Noah Hanifin comparables:
To BOS: Orlov, Hathaway
To WSH: Smith, 1st, 2nd, 3rd
To EDM: Ekholm, 6th
To NAS: Barrier, Schaefer, 1st, 4th
To LAK: Gavrikov, Korpisalo
To CBJ: Quick, 1st, 3rd
To OTT: Chychrun (term remaining)
To ARZ: 1st, 2nd, 2nd
I think that sets Hanifin's value at a 1st and 2nd in my eyes. He's a bit better and younger than what the other pending UFAs returned, but without additional term on his deal I think that places him as less than what Chychrun returned. Does his value improve based on the rumoured extension that's sitting in his pocket if he signs it for the trade (8 Years, $7.5M?)?
In 2022/2023, there wasn't a really good comparison for Chris Tanev due to his age. Ekholm could be viewed as reasonable comparison, but he was a bit younger (32 turning 33 the following May) than Tanev's 34 (assuming Tanev is dealt after December 20th) and Ekholm had 3+ years left on his contract. I'd probably take a stab at Tanev being worth a 2nd + 3rd, or 2nd + 2nd?

I would take Minten and a 3rd for Tanev.

I think the comparable for Hanifin is Lindholm. 1st and 2 2nds with an extension

That would be my preferred return too. Minten fits exactly what the Flames need, 6'2 cerebral center.

Treliving has never traded firsts for expiring rentals. He's well known for window shopping, wouldn't expect any of our rental players to be traded to Toronto. Maybe Lindholm with an extention.

He also doesn’t really trade prospects. One of those will have to change if he wants Tanev. The Leafs have no seconds through 26

He’s GM of a team that is supposed to be going on a deep run in the playoffs with the right personnel.
Pony up. We know you like to with RHD.

Same story when he was in Calgary. Someone else will pony up IMO.
