Moment hanafin is traded - flames will be looking for a replacement. So doesn't make sense.

If Tre is go bullish on getting Tanev now with retention on his salary, then the ask from the Flames should be their first this year

You don't need to explain anything but you have explained how one team, the team we are least likely to trade with, might be willing to overpay for Hanifin, that has nothing to do with the post saying teams aren't overpaying for a player based on short period of good play like Ruttiger said in his post.

Might as well add the following teams where he would be a top two dman
Jets
blues
Coyotes
Predators
Wild
Kings
Red wings
Sharks
Ducks
Habs
Capitals
Flyers
Blue jackets
You can probably make an argument for him on other teams not on that list but he is definitely top two or the best dman on every team in that list.

Moment we trade any of our UFA's we are looking a replacement. We don't have a Lindholm replacement, we don't have a Tanev replacement. Zadorov I think we can replace internally, although we don't have great options but bottom pairing isn't tough to find ok-ish options.
Hanifin doesn't fit in with where this team is and he can bring back a good return of players that can fit better.

Some of those are debatable but the post quoted said #1 defenseman. And he isn't #1 on many of those teams.
Those are also a lot of teams that likely have no interest in trading for Hanifin at all, so not sure they will have much impact on the trade value you get for him.

Most of those teams are not in contention. They may even in sell mode.
Not sure if they want to spend a lot to get a #2 dman if they are not competing now.

There are a lot of teams that are in contention that would give up a lot for a dman like Hanifin. That being said he is the only one of the UFA’s that I hope the Flames keep.

So Hanifin is good, but not that good?
He will net a good return, but not that good?
Seems like you've got it covered.

Hanifin is playing great out there...he could be top pair on a lot of teams right now...you thanked the Oiler fan post saying he wasn't a top pair but he would obviously be top pair for those clowns.

This in the Hanifin we saw in the last 1/3 of last season too, and I think it's who he is.
This year most of the team started poorly.
I'd put the player in the team's top 10% for consistency. He doesn't have a lot of bad games.
His metrics and usage have him as a 2 league wide, and that means over $6M and likely over $7M when he signs his next contract.

Sell high on Hanifin.
Get younger get picks and get someone who’s committed to the Flames.
Don’t circle back and overspend on a guy who wanted nothing to do with this city.

New pet peeve: typing "the player" when you could just as easily say the person's name. Everyone trying to sound more professional. (edit: not specifically @Bingo, more in reference to Friedman's post)

Looks like Retool is off the menu. Welcome to more of the same.

Why wouldn't Conroy be open to retention?
We took a worse offer to not retain of Zadorov.
We very well might not be trading Hanifin.
Why woulnd't we use a retention slot for one season to get a better deal on Tanev?
