Zadorov has played with Tyler Myers, Ian Cole and Pius Suter. In the off-season he shares a strength and conditioning coach with Ilya Mihkeyev, Andrei Kuzmenko and Vasili Podkolzin. He grew up playing with Kuzmenko and his wife and Mihkeyev's wife are apparently best friends.
So this may be a mixture of personnel and personal acquisition.
Oh, and according to Zadorov his NHL team growing up was the Canucks.

They are totally signing him lol

I think Zadorov is very good at spin. Not that he is making my things up, but I think he has a strong sense of what people want to hear, and knows how to deliver. I remember him making a lot of similar sorts of comments and gestures through the Calgary media.

Like when he said he loves Calgary so much he never wants to leave and might retire here after playing? In September? Lol

Even if the value is below fans' expectations Conroy is clearly stirring this team in the right direction. He also hasn't made any blunders yet.

What direction is he steering the team in? I'm not quite sure. How he handles Lindholm and Hanifin might give us a better idea but up until this point I'm not sure. You moved out two roster players including a top 6 and brought back only a bottom 6. That's not improving or retooling. He brought back three mid round picks over the next 3 years. That's definitely not helping a re tool anytime soon. Will they actually commit to a rebuild? I'm skeptical about that. It will definitely be interesting to see how they handle Lindholm and Hanifin.

Here are things Conroy said, and/or implemented:
1. Seeing what we have in our young players by giving them opportunity with the big club
1b. Not signing PTOs
2. Not losing UFAs for nothing
3. Weaponizing cap space, and getting ready to retain on deals to maximize assets in this upcoming deadline
4. He mentioned his strength as a GM was amature scouting, so I'm guessing he would prioritize scouting and development.
5. Only keeping players that want to be here, and hopefully not overpaying for free agent merceneries
I don't know if the Flames will commit to a full rebuild, but I like the gradual injection of youth while trading vets that would demand big money contracts.
I'm not as certain as you're that Sharangovich is a bottom 6 player. I also don't know what Toffoli will be on his next contract, so I think it was the right decision not to extend him. The decision not to extend Z at or above his cap hit was also the right decision IMO.

I’m not sure how people can see how the team is playing recently after the disaster of last year and not be happy with the general direction Conroy is taking this team. More youth injected into this team even has the signed veterans playing better.

Well, sure, but that's the whole problem. You don't draft top-3 by playing better. Everybody knows the purpose of playing hockey games is to lose them so you can collect all the prospects.

It will be interesting to see how Zadorov does on another team. Like Gudbranson, he is one of those players who was hit and miss depending on where he played. As much as forwards on the Flames have disappointed recently, defensemen have impressed. Even tweeners like Gilbert and DeSimone have looked OK. I guess we'll see who made who pretty soon.

He wanted to stay, Calgary would not meet his demands, which was smart.

Sure but the point is that wherever Zadorov went was the team he was going to say he always wanted to play for. That’s just him talking and there’s nothing wrong with it I guess.

I don't understand the wondering about the Flames organization and whether they will go full rebuild or can commit to a full rebuild. Nothing the organization has done, with various management in place and more or less the same ownership or majority ownership in place, since the Young Guns era has given any indication this organization ever wants to go full rebuild. It's not not an unknown answer to a simple question. The question has been asked, and the answer has been a definitive no for what, almost 25+ years?
Last rebuild, attendance plummeted, the dollar was trading low, and the team almost left town. I think a thread here has been tracking this season's sagging attendance (perhaps it's rebounded since the teams on-ice results have), and the dollar isn't doing too hot. Say what you will about Edwards and the group, and there's definitely a lot of bad to be said, they want to make the team work in Calgary. Which means they don't want to go through another stretch where the continued existence of the franchise here is in question. And as much as dedicated fans in spaces like this would be excited by a rebuild, the fanbase as a whole has shown little appetite for it.
Whether it's changing up the roster around the edges, or a near complete overhaul of the core like we have seen in the last two seasons, the path will never be full rebuild. It will continue to be focused on staying competitive now and adding for later when possible.

Personally I don't believe it will be an "rebuild", its more of a "retool"
Where they don't rip it to the ground,
Players like Hanifin and Lindholm definitely should be moved.

Zadorov was a beauty while he was here, and I do believe if things worked out differently with the Flames direction he would have been happy to stay long term, which we can't say for many players.
He was an excellent #5 dman who could chip in with some goals, throw a big hit, stand up for his team mates, and slide into the top 4 for short periods if needed.
He earned every penny while he was here and I wish him nothing but the best. Let's not be the franchise that craps on players when they leave.

If you were just retooling you’d consider keeping Hanifin at his age and ability. Lindholm, Tanev would still be moved for sure.

If that is the case, Conroy will spend the picks and the cap space to pick up a player for the ‘run’ soon
