In a cap world - where everyone spends to the cap - the best teams are going to be the ones who can get the most excess value out of their $83.5 million.
Zadorov at $3.75m is probably providing a slight more value or right near his contract value right now. Even if the Canucks sign him - its unlikely he's going to provide value over his contract as he ages.
You are right that whoever they get with this 3rd and 5th round pick are unlikely to be as good as Zadorov. You are basically trading a little present value for some potential future value (plus the cap space value the Flames gained)

Yeah there is a better use of 4M then a 5th dman let alone a raise

I liked Zadorov as a Calgary Flame and wish him the best. He will always have my respect for being outspoken about Putin and Russia.

If it's to keep the slots open then this is likely a very good move.
If it's an owner not wanting to retain for bottom line reasons, then not so much.
I get the fear that it's #2 given their history, but there's a pretty big distinction this time around ... the GM is out in the media after the transaction talking about cap space, brokering and saving his 3 retention spots.
That isn't done unless you have a sign off to use them in my mind.
So they decided to take less for Zadorov, to have more flexibility and accrue more cap space by the deadline for other deals. If his plan comes to fruition, then this was likely a very good trade. If it goes for not it cost them the difference between 2024 and 2026 in value.
Didn't blow my socks off, but the deal is fine as it stands, and could play a really important role in a future transaction.
|
I know people keep saying that is a thing but I think they have tried to take on contract but it hasn't worked out.
We all know Mike Ribeiro used his NTC even though the Flames were going to buy him out. Carolina was close to sending Ward to Calgary to get bought out. Eventually in the Lack trade to Calgary the Flames took Murray from Carolina and bought him out. So I don't think paying or retaining is an issue, if it makes the team better.
They are paying Sutter probably more than all their their buyouts and retentions.

Yeah Zadorov is probably going to be too expensive to be valuable
His best value is probably right now as a rental
That said those picks would be very lucky to turn out as good as Zadorov.

Yet, Calgary thought differently when they signed him, as did you, you were very happy with the signing.

Luckily, not only do we have the picks, we now have up to $3.75 million to spend on making the roster better including the option of using part or all of it on a 5D.

Zadorov's contract is only for another 4-5 months at $3.75M. Retention of even his full $3.75M is not that big of a deal, really. If you're talking about retention, if his contract was for another few years, that'll be not so good. But this one comes on before the next season starts. If you're talking about contracts like Markstrom where you're trying to trade him, taking on part of that dead cap space is probably the only option, but it'll definitely hurt no matter what unless if the return is good. If taking on that small amount of cap this year to maximize on a better draft, just take the better pick.
I'm actually more upset that Conroy didn't wait a bit longer and the trade is done with a rival team in the same division. This team is like a box of chocolates. Ya never know what you're gonna get.

They have three retention slots and they can use them on Lindholm/Tanev/Hanifin.

A 2024 3rd and 2026 5th would have been better for the immediate rebuild situation. Makes me wonder if Conroy thinks there's a couple years left with this core?

When you're sitting on contracts like huberdeau's you need guys in fringe positions i.e. your third pairing & fourth line to come cheap. Not feasible to be shelling out 4mil for those guys.
If Vancouver wants to and think he's worth that then they can knock themselves out.
It wasn't really going to work here at that money.

I agree with this
I also like that Tre was in the mix, asking Conny to retain, and Conny said no

By not trading Zad to Toronto you exponentially increase Tanevs value for them

And? Are you suggesting things don't change? The guy has been terrible this season and wants a raise and term.
I have liked lots of players...that doesn't mean I want them on lifetime contracts that keep going up.
Zadorov has been a distant 5 this season and whenever he was given bigger minutes he choked. Next you are going to call me out for liking Gaudreau two years ago.

He signed a two year contract, and Zadorov has always been what he is today. He hasn’t largely changed. He was a # 5 when he signed, and you actually thought he left money on the table. Today he is too expensive.
What changed? He got traded to a different team. He now stinks.

One thing that did change: This season, Zadorov played his best hockey when the team was playing at its worst. As his teammates got better, he got worse. I don't know if it had to do with his trade request, or if he's just not a good fit for Huska's system, but his value was trending down.

Him speaking up against Putler did it for me.
Takes real courage, character and moral conviction.
And wasn't his family on the other side of the fence about Ukraine? Man, that's not easy.
Even as a Canuck I'll have that respect for him as a human.

I was a Big Z fan.
But the math was never going to work out with all of the UFAs. Some or all are going to have to go.
My guess is they try to sign Lindholm and Tanev and they trade Hanifin. We have a surplus of young defenders and a big shortage of skilled wingers. I think they will try and trade Hanifin for a prospect winger and a pick or two.

Gosh I hope not. The easiest position to play.
Seattle got Tolvanen for free and Bjorkstrand for the Zadorov return.
