Saw the preview for this at Seton Sunday…. I just don’t get the appeal. They try to make it seem like some epic masterpiece, but I just see AstroBoy / Speed Racer 80’s level animation. Hard pass for me, but “art” is subjective.
A billion times better than the "art" they are outputting for Marvel and Star Wars movies.

My boy loves Wes A movies, actually so do I, The Fantastic Mr. Fox is amazing.
Going to have to hunt this down
It’s on Prime. It’s got to be peak Anderson I don’t see how it can be better. Basically blending every filmmaking tool he’s ever used into one and nailing it.
Come on man… this is a hand drawn animated movie done by a literal master of the craft. If you don’t like the story or whatever else fine, but criticizing the animation is like looking at a Van Gogh and saying “eh, it’s just paint on a canvas, I don’t get the big deal?”
Like I said, art is subjective. I could, and have spent days appreciating most art forms in some major museums… until the post impressionist and abstract sections. Nope, no eye for it.
Oppenheimer wasn't crap but it also was unnecessarily dialogue heavy with dialogue you couldn't hear. I look back on it now and it was good, but not the movie of the year (definitely wasn't crap though). Now, Dunkirk - definition of overrated.
Thanks' so it's not just me, watched it and thought it was decidedly Meh!, it wasn't terrible but was in the end just a biopic with all the failings of any biopic, it doesn't matter how great the person is, you are making a film about real people's lives and they aren't particularly dramatic, it certainly didn't need to be shot on IMAX 70mm.

Alright! Which one of you Numpties recommended 'The Holdovers?'
Are you having a good day? This movie will fix that.
Anyways, it was fantastic, I'd give it a solid 8/10.
But its not a good time. It is not a rip-roaring, laugh-infused thrill ride but once again Giamatti steals everything.
After finishing up the very average Billions (I'm a sucker for finishing what I started), I have really soured on Giamatti. Maybe i should watch this to see him actually try to act again.

I havent seen Billions but Giamatti is almost always excellent.
Just a master of his craft. Things like The Holdovers, The Illusionist, Sideways, Barney's Version, thats where he's really in his element and he just takes over.

He's in a lot of stuff and it's not always good. As a result, when his name is attached to something I'm not necessarily going out of my way to see it.
You look at his filmography and along with the good projects you mention, there's a lot of crap. San Andreas, Spiderman 2, Jungle Cruise, Lady in the Water...
I'm looking for any recommendations for a specific sub-genre of Survivor movies. I don't know if there is an official name, but I'd call it Scavenger Survivor, or maybe McGyver Survivor. It's where the characters use the resources around them to survive a harrowing experience.
Looking through the Survivor genre, I just get a lot of lost at sea, walking in the mountains type of movies, which dont really scratch the itch.
I'd say that a good example is The Martian, also maybe 127 Hours. Any recommendations?

If you don't mind reading, I highly recommend Andy Weir's second book, Project Hail Mary, which I think I liked more than the Martian.
Just coming back to this topic a few pages ago. Based on some recs here and elsewhere, I've watched Arctic 2018 and Trapped 2016, and both are good examples of scavenging survivor movies. Trapped has subtitles and may be a bit harder to find though, but I yelled at my TV a few times on how I'd do a better job Both recommended!

You can't forget American Splendor. One of my favorite performances ever...of all time. I'm dead serious.
Win/Win is another pretty good film of his, much lighter than the rest:
