Then you wait and move him to another team at the deadline, Canucks aren't the only team in the market for him in the long run for sure.
This only makes sense right now if A) You need him out of the locker room ASAP (doubtful team was playing good), or B) You think there is something you can do with that cap space if you have it available before the deadline.

I thought he'd return more, but I'm more happy about moving out a guy who didn't want to be here.

I don’t know how you can say “doubtful” to A, when he’s the only one on the team who has publicly announced he wanted out. Add in to that the team is playing well, and those guys don’t want someone half engaged.

I do think we make a nice trade with Toronto now for Tanev. I bet trading the full salary of Zadorov played into that as Conroy already knows Treliving is willing to pay a price for a D-man if the other team helps him fit the salary in.

Conroy is going to get criticized no matter what he does.

Sam Bennett asked for a trade and the team waited months.
Zadorov fought for one of his teammates this past week and players all went up to him and gave him a pat.
I really doubt that there is some poison that needed to be removed from the locker room, and even if there was it wasn't impacting on ice play. The locker room are all professionals, they had already figured it out.
Flames for sure took less (how much less is unknown but I think you get a 2nd at the deadline) to make this trade right now instead of waiting, I'm pretty confident in that.

I don't feel like the return is bad in the here and now.
But a dman like Zadorov undoubtedly garners more at the trade deadline.

A third three years out is not a third in this draft, it’s worth less. The chart they use in the NFL generally has a reduction in value of one round for every year the pick extends out. Under that logic, this would be two fifth round picks. Now I think that may be a little excessive in terms of discounting the value but to be sure, it was the Canucks extending that pick out. Not what Conroy wanted.
As others have said, I really thought Zadorov improved his value with the team but arguably this is no more than what Flames paid for him.
That bottom pair could be an adventure tonight.

Good point on B. We’ll get to see if that turns out to be the case.

I do wonder what Tre was gonna give the Flames if they decided to retain salary

Bogus reasoning. Then you could trade a 2024 4th for a 2027 1st. Nobody's doing that.

Zadorov likely has the least value out of the big 4 pending UFAs, so that return should be the floor.
Another way to look at it is that the Flames have removed one option from the market for teams like Toronto, Arizona, and NYI who are all apparently looking. There should be better bids as supply goes down.

I believe in the Jays.

This seems fair. He's a bottom pairing d-man (and a pricey one at that)... this is the type of return they get (not having to use a retention slot is a bonus).

Or, maybe, this was the best trade available at this time and they wanted the distraction gone…
Or, maybe, there was a better draft pick on the table, but it had to come with a player for cap purposes, and maybe they needed the cap space…
In no way is it “the greatest move”, but maybe it’s the best current option for a multitude of reasons.

it seems like for every FA that Calgary has, everyone thinks we should be getting a 1st round pick + other considerations. i dont think that was ever going to happen. i dont think it is a bad trade, the negative is that the 3rd is in 2026. thats not great.
